The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) seeks an experienced Inspector III to analyze complex plans and perform independent technical assignments to inspect, monitor, and report on work activities on state roads, bridges, and right of way.
Responsibilities- Analyze complex plans and conduct independent technical assignments to inspect, monitor, and report on work activities performed within the state Right of Way, verifying compliance with all State and Federal specifications, plans, permits, policies and procedures.
- Perform approved testing techniques using hand tools, gauges, and instruments to ensure materials conformed to FDOT requirements.
- Use engineering tools, equipment, instruments and computers for technical engineering tasks, problem solving and record keeping.
- Provide information to consulting engineers, developers, architects and permit applicants as needed and prepare documentation to validate payments to roadway contractors.
- Interpret documents related to authorized Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic) device usage, installation/placement and materials; review work‑site activities for safety conformity and take corrective measures.
- Conduct surveys of signs, guardrail and attenuators; provide RCI surveys, fill data coding sheets, enter roadway data into computer database, gather data, perform preliminary reviews for maintenance contract needs, assist in preparation of maintenance contracts and prepare specifications.
- Conduct or attend pre‑work conferences on maintenance contracts and meet with contractors, utility owners and permit tees throughout life of projects; act as a Department representative on contract and permit issues; issue work documents as directed.
- Perform plans review for constructability and adherence to Department standards and specifications; provide comments on Department policies and procedures as requested.
- Knowledge of engineering tools to perform field inspections of worksites for compliance with FDOT roadway standards.

- Abilities:

- Lifting 50 pounds and stooping, climbing, squatting, pushing, crawling, and bending.
High School Diploma or Certificate of High School Equivalency, Class E Driver License, and 12 months of infrastructure design, construction, or maintenance experience; or an Associate’s Degree or higher.
Additional Requirements- Must complete Construction Math and Plans Reading self‑study courses within 11 months of appointment, obtain Advanced Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic) certification and Qualified Stormwater Management Inspector certification within one year and maintain them.
- May be required to drive a state‑owned or leased vehicle; valid Class E Driver License required.
- Work with or around Department of Corrections inmates; work with hazardous materials; work nights/weekends; availability for emergency response and participation in Transportation Emergency Management Team (TEMT).
- Three or more moving violations in past three years accumulating three or more points per violation.
- Any two convictions of reckless driving in past three years.
- Suspension or revocation of the driver’s license for moving violations in past three years.
