Job Details

FULL‑TIME position. Class B Commercial Driver's License (school bus endorsement) required. Position type:

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED; or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience (in lieu of high school diploma or GED, applicants must sign an agreement to obtain a GED within two (2) years of initial employment).
  • Valid Florida Commercial Driver's License, Class B (or higher) with school bus and passenger endorsement.
  • Successful completion of an approved training course for school bus operators.
  • Successful completion, as determined by a School Board approved physician, of a Florida School Bus Operators Medical Examination Report for Commercial Driver Fitness Determination.
  • Satisfactory clearance of a criminal history records check and drug screening.

Primary Performance Responsibilities
  • Obey all traffic laws.
  • Observe all mandatory safety regulations for school buses.
  • Maintain student discipline and report student misconduct to the principal of the school or to a supervisor.
  • Inform the Transportation Department of any suggested changes in route schedules or bus load.
  • Assist other school bus operators on their routes in case of emergency.
  • Follow printed route for the bus unless permission to follow an alternate route is given by the Transportation Office.
  • Keep to assigned time schedule when traffic and weather conditions permit.
  • Discharge students only at authorized stops.
  • Transport only authorized persons as identified by procedure.
  • Complete and submit all required reports and information to the Transportation Office in accordance with the policy of the School Board and State Board of Education regulations.
  • Operate any school bus assigned to the Transportation fleet.
  • Perform pre‑trip inspection of the bus before each operation.
  • Perform a complete interior inspection of the bus after each run and trip to ensure no students are left on board.
  • Notify the proper authorities in case of mechanical failure on appropriate forms.
  • Maintain a clean and orderly bus.
  • Report all accidents or incidents to the Transportation Office using the required forms and following the required timelines.
  • Attend all required in‑service training sessions.
  • Maintain an effective working relationship with other employees, parents, and the public.
  • Wear the prescribed uniform whenever operating the bus or while otherwise on duty.
  • Comply with Florida State School Board regulations, School Board policies, and Transportation Department regulations and procedures.
  • Exercise responsible leadership on all school trips.
Additional Duties

Perform all other duties as assigned by the supervising administrator.

Term

Length of contract and number of hours worked are determined by specific allocation as approved annually during the planning‑budgeting process.

Appraisal

Performance will be appraised annually in accordance with School Board of Highlands County policies.

Pay Grade

According to the School Board of Highlands County Non‑instructional Salary Schedule.
