RoleData Center Technician IV role:
The technician must possess expert knowledge and be responsible for the operational integrity and regulatory compliance of the data center electrical, mechanical, fire life safety systems, and communications infrastructure. This position has a Day Shift 7:00am-3:00pm, Monday - Friday
.
Mechanical responsibilities include chilled water systems and components, HVAC systems such as roof top units, CRAC/CRAH units, and humidification systems. Electrical responsibilities cover electrical/critical power distribution from the utility/generator main switch gear through the UPS to the customer load. Fire life safety responsibilities include wet sprinkler systems and pre-action sprinkler systems and associated detection devices. Communications infrastructure responsibilities include IFD / MDF / MMR management, structured cabling and supporting infrastructure ownership, and customer space management.
The role works closely with the Data Center Manager to maximize customer uptime in a cost-effective way, identify and repair problems quickly, ensure quality from contractors, and meet internal customer needs. A Tier IV technician develops creative approaches to reduce operating costs and improve efficiency.
- Data center subject matter expert for electrical, mechanical, controls, and fire life safety systems.
- Operate, monitor, maintain, and respond to abnormal conditions in facilities systems (Electrical, Mechanical, Communications, Building Monitoring and Control).
- Tracking and trending operational characteristics.
- Mentoring of junior staff.
- Work with the site Data Center Manager to track and complete an aggressive preventive and predicative maintenance schedule.
- Help determine maintenance requirements for mechanical and electrical systems in coordination with the Data Center Manager.
- Ensure data center operates at maximum efficiency; analyze conditions, recommend new technologies, and pursue cost reduction.
- Manage systems to avoid unplanned, customer-impacting outages.
- Manage data floor and back-of-house loading capacity to ensure cooling system efficiency.
- Provide applied mechanical and integrated control expertise for the entire data center.
- Serve as a knowledge expert on fire and electrical codes.
- Contribute to procedural documentation for preventative or corrective maintenance activities.
- Assist Data Center Manager with maintenance discrepancy database management and issue resolution with Operations management.
- Trouble Ticket Management;
Work Order Completion;
Infrastructure projects (Internal/Customer). - Cage Build-Outs, Overhead Installations, Rack and Stack.
- Navigate and utilize a CMMS system.
- Use developed procedures to solve problems; assist in asset and consumable inventory management.
- Labeling and tracking of all equipment per established procedures.
- Ensure SLA obligations are met and data is uploaded to the OSS.
- Provide physical security within Core Site premises.
- Deliver day-to-day exceptional customer service and support.
- Incident escalation and report writing.
- Monitor the building fire alarm system and conduct regular facility and security tours.
- Adhere to Core Site’s Principles of Operational Excellence and guiding principles.
- Expert understanding of electrical and mechanical systems in a data center environment, including transformers, PLCs, generators, switch gear, UPS, chilled water systems, CRAC/CRAH systems, and sprinkler systems.
- Expert knowledge of NEC, NFPA 70E, NFPA 72, NFPA 25, and related fire life safety codes and building codes.
- Expert knowledge of fiber optics/cabling infrastructure and industry best practices.
- Expert knowledge of industrial safety practices (lockout/tag out, arc flash, OSHA and state regulations).
- Experience with data trending/tracking and analysis and ability to learn and use PC-based monitoring systems.
- 5-7 years of experience with large commercial/industrial systems including chilled water, large centrifugal chillers, cooling towers, heat exchangers, water treatment, VFDs, pumps, HVAC equipment, CRAC/CRAH, humidification, BMS/PLC controls, diesel generators, fuel systems, 480/277 and 208/120 distribution, static UPS, and…
