Role

Critical Operations Engineer II. The role requires expert knowledge and accountability for the operational integrity and regulatory compliance of data center electrical, mechanical, fire life safety systems, and communications infrastructure. The position is on the Day shift, Monday – Friday.

Responsibilities
  • Data center subject matter expert for electrical, mechanical, controls, and fire life safety systems.
  • Operate, monitor, maintain, and respond to abnormal conditions in facilities systems (Electrical, Mechanical, Communications, Building Monitoring and Control).
  • Track and trend operational characteristics.
  • Mentor junior staff.
  • Collaborate with the site Data Center Manager to track and complete preventive and predictive maintenance schedules.
  • Determine maintenance requirements for mechanical and electrical systems in coordination with the Data Center Manager.
  • Maximize data center operational efficiency through analysis, technology recommendations, and cost reduction; cross-functional collaboration with integrated systems and IT.
  • Manage systems to avoid unplanned, customer-impacting outages.
  • Manage data floor and back-of-house mechanical loading capacity to maintain high cooling efficiency.
  • Provide applied mechanical and integrated control expertise for the data center.
  • Serve as a primary knowledge expert on fire and electrical codes.
  • Provide technical writing for preventative or corrective maintenance procedures.
  • Assist the Data Center Manager with maintenance discrepancy database management and issue resolution.
  • Trouble Ticket Management and Work Order Completion Process.
  • Lead infrastructure projects (internal and customer).
  • Cage Build-Outs, Overhead Installations, Rack and Stack (via OL).
  • Navigate and utilize a CMMS system and follow developed procedures to solve problems.
  • Assist in asset and consumable inventory management; proper labeling of equipment per procedures.
  • Ensure processes meet SLA requirements and data is uploaded to OSS accordingly.
  • Provide physical security within Core Site premises and day-to-day exceptional customer service and support.
  • Incident escalation and report writing; monitor the building fire alarm system.
  • Maintain regular facility and security tours, documenting and responding to issues.
  • Adhere to Core Site’s Principles of Operational Excellence and 8 Guiding Principles.
Requirements Knowledge
  • Expert understanding of electrical and mechanical systems in data center environments (e.g., distribution, transformers, PLCs, generators, switch gear, UPS, chillers, CRAC/CRAH, sprinkler systems).
  • Expert knowledge of NEC, NFPA 70E, NFPA 72, NFPA 25, and building codes related to fire life safety.
  • Expert knowledge of fiber optics and cabling infrastructure.
  • Expert knowledge of industrial safety practices (lockout/tagout, arc flash, OSHA/state regulations).
  • Experience with data trending/tracking and PC-based monitoring systems.
Skills
  • 5–7+ years in installing, maintaining, or troubleshooting large commercial/industrial systems (e.g., chilled water, large centrifugal chillers, cooling towers, pumps, HVAC equipment, BMS/PLC controls, diesel generators, high/low voltage distribution, static UPS, pre-action systems).
  • Proven leadership and team coordination skills.
  • Proven ability to lay out, pull, dress, and terminate fiber and copper cabling.
  • Experience diagnosing and repairing IT hardware, servers, network switches, and structured cabling.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including Microsoft Office.
