Position:
State Fair Community College (SFCC) is seeking a full-time Instrumental Music Instructor and Performance Director at the Sedalia campus. This position plays a vital role in growing and sustaining a vibrant instrumental music program that supports student success, campus culture, and community engagement. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing and directing the SFCC Concert Band, SFCC Jazz Band, and SFCC Pep Band, leading each ensemble to its highest artistic potential.

A significant emphasis will be placed on building enrollment through active recruitment, cultivating relationships with regional high school programs, and creating a welcoming, engaging environment that supports strong retention of music students throughout their academic journey. Additional responsibilities include enhancing existing instrumental ensembles, teaching a range of music courses, leading curriculum development, supervising part-time faculty, managing budgets, advising students, and participating in institutional service.

The instructor will also be expected to direct a minimum of two music performances each semester, showcasing student talent and representing SFCC within the community. This role is ideal for an educator who is passionate about musical excellence, committed to growing a thriving program, and dedicated to providing meaningful support that helps students persist, complete their goals, and confidently progress in their musical and academic pathways.

Classes will be predominantly on the Sedalia campus but may also include extended campus sites and online at discretion of the Associate Dean. This position has a projected start date of August 1, 2026.

QUALIFICATIONS:

A Master's degree in Music or Music Education (with an emphasis in instrumental music) completed by August 1, 2026 is required.

Candidates with the following qualifications will receive preference:

* Demonstrated success directing instrumental ensembles, with special consideration for candidates who have experience directing pep bands for athletic events. Experience teaching instrumental applied lessons is also highly valued.

* College-level teaching experience, particularly within music programs.

* Proven ability to collaborate across disciplines, such as theatre, with additional preference for those with experience in musical theatre productions.

* A strong understanding of and commitment to the community college mission, including a clearly demonstrated student-centered approach to teaching and learning.

* Commitment to academic excellence, including rigor, retention, and the use of outcomes assessment to improve instruction.

* Familiarity with active-learning strategies and the ability to integrate them effectively in the classroom and rehearsal environments.

* Willingness to assume leadership and service responsibilities beyond classroom instruction, including recruiting prospective students, advising current students, participating in assessment activities, mentoring adjunct faculty, and leading musical groups-especially the pep band at sporting events.

* Proficiency with instructional technology, including experience with Learning Management Systems such as Canvas and the ability to enhance traditional courses with online components.

* Strong oral and written communication skills and the ability to represent the program professionally on campus and in the community.

Teaching Responsibilities:

o Teach 15 credit hours during fall and spring semesters in courses such as:

* Concert Bands I-VI

* Jazz Bands I-VI

* Music Appreciation

* History of Rock Music

* Music History & Literature before 1800

* Music History and Literature Since 1800

* Applied Instrumental Lessons I-VI

Program Support &

Collaboration:

o Work closely with the Music Program Coordinator to promote, maintain, and grow the Music Program.

o Assist with student recruitment and program outreach initiatives.

o The instructor is expected to teach courses in a variety of delivery methods including various parts of term and in on-ground, hybrid, Webcon and online formats.
