CLASS CONCEPT:
State Fair Community College is seeking a dedicated TRIO Professional Math Tutor to support students participating in the federally funded TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) program. This part‑time position (up to 15 hours/week) is ideal for individuals passionate about student success and equity in education. The tutor will provide individualized and small‑group support to help students build confidence and competence in mathematics, ranging from pre‑algebra through calculus.
Tutoring sessions may be conducted in person or via Zoom. Tutors are expected to track and document sessions, assess student needs, and maintain regular office hours. In addition to academic support, tutors may be asked to mentor students, lead occasional math workshops, and assist with TRIO events and outreach activities. Strong communication, organization, and collaboration skills are essential as tutors meet regularly with TRIO staff to coordinate services and monitor student progress.
This position is contingent upon continued federal TRIO SSS funding and plays a vital role in promoting student retention, persistence, and degree completion among first‑generation, income‑eligible, and disability‑identified students.
EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES:- Provide one‑on‑one math tutoring (in person or via Zoom) up to 15 hours per week.
- Work with students in a variety of math courses from pre‑algebra to calculus.
- Conduct math workshops and lead occasional sessions.
- Maintain records on students tutored and track progress.
- Assess the math skills of participants to identify their needs.
- Maintain regular office hours.
- Assist in promotion, marketing, and recruitment activities for the project.
- Meet regularly with SSS staff and coordinate services.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience:
2 years of teaching and/or tutoring experience. - Education:
Bachelor’s degree required in math or related field. - Skills:
ability to identify educational needs, understanding of mathematics through calculus, basic computer skills.
Completed applications will include cover letter, resume, three contact references, and unofficial transcripts (official transcripts must be requested upon hire). Employment will require a criminal background check at College expense. Preference is given to Missouri residents.
