Job Description

The High School Ceramics & Digital Art Teacher provides learning experiences meant to inspire students to explore creativity through clay and three-dimensional art, guided by the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks and district standards and requirements. The teacher also provides elective courses in digital art.

Qualifications
  • Licensed, or eligible for licensure in Visual Art, PreK-12 by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
  • Bachelor's degree in Art Education, Fine Arts, or a related field required;
    Master's degree preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience in ceramics, including wheel-throwing, hand-building, glazing techniques, and kiln operation.
  • Experience or willingness to develop skills in digital art and design.
  • Knowledge of art history and contemporary practices in ceramic arts.
  • Strong classroom management and organizational skills.
  • Ability to inspire, motivate, and engage students of diverse skill levels and backgrounds.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing, with children and adults.
  • Commitment to remain current in content knowledge and teaching strategies.
  • Commitment to fostering creativity and critical thinking in the visual arts.
  • Ability to relate well with students, colleagues, parents, and staff.
Responsibilities & Essential Functions
  • Develop and implement plans for the curriculum program assigned and show written evidence of preparation as required.
  • Plan and use appropriate instructional/learning strategies, activities, materials and equipment that reflect accommodation and regulatory compliance regarding the individual needs of students with IEPs or 504 Plans.
  • Cooperate with other members of the staff in planning and implementing instructional goals, objectives and methods according to the MA Curriculum Frameworks.
  • Use appropriate technologies in the teaching/learning process.
  • Use formative and summative assessment to inform instruction and improve student achievement.
  • Present as a positive role model for students that supports the mission of the school.
  • Create an environment that is respectful, challenging and responsive to diverse student needs including the physical, social, and emotional development of all students.
  • Demonstrate sound behavior management practices and administer discipline according to school department policies and administrative regulations.
  • Teach multiple sections of semester-long ceramics and 3D art classes, including wheel-throwing, hand-building, glazing, and kiln operation.
  • Teach one or two sections of digital art, generally at the entry level and driven by teacher design.
  • Develop engaging lesson plans that align with curriculum standards and foster students’ technical and artistic growth.
  • Create a safe and organized studio environment conducive to creativity, exploration, and skill development.
  • Instruct students on the proper use and care of materials, tools, and equipment, including clay mixers, pottery wheels, and kilns.
  • Manage and maintain inventory of clay, glazes, and ceramics tools, and oversee the maintenance of kilns and other equipment.
  • Encourage students to develop their individual artistic voices and to critically analyze works of art, both their own and others’.
  • Assess student progress and provide regular feedback through critiques and written evaluations.
  • Foster a positive classroom culture that promotes respect, collaboration, and high standards of behavior.
  • Collaborate with colleagues in planning interdisciplinary projects and contributing to art shows and exhibitions.
  • Maintain accurate records of student attendance, grades, and progress as required by school policies.
  • Stay current with developments in ceramic arts and education through professional development opportunities.
  • Establish and maintain open lines of communication with students and their parents.
  • Maintain a professional relationship with all colleagues, students, parents and community members.
  • Provide direction and monitor the activities of a Teaching Assistant (Paraprofessional), if one is assigned.
  • Other duties, as assigned according to the SEA contract.
