Library Supervisor (Job )

Responsibilities
  • Perform supervisory duties, including acting as supervisor-in-charge on designated evenings and weekends, assisting in training new non‑supervisory personnel, and collaborating with the Circulation Manager in staff evaluations.
  • Handle daily supervisory operations: opening/closing the library, processing reserve and overdue reports, reconciling cash drawers, preparing revenue reports, revising the daily desk schedule, issuing electronic library cards, and billing customer accounts.
  • Provide quality customer service: maintain privacy and protect sensitive data, answer questions about library collections and services, assist with electronic resources, offer reference and research assistance, provide instruction on library equipment and technology, and enforce library policies and procedures.
  • Perform general circulation duties and collect payment for library services and fees using the Point of Sale (POS) system.
  • Manage the library’s room reservation system: handle online, email, and in‑person inquiries; create and edit reservations; explain and enforce room policies; lend audio/visual equipment; take payment; and set up equipment for meetings.
  • Provide feedback to library management on policies and procedures, analyze and propose solutions to operational problems, prepare incident reports, submit work orders for maintenance, and serve as a point of contact with emergency services during incidents.
  • Prepare weekly cash deposits for Finance and ensure proper line‑item accounts, report statistics to relevant departments and institutions, and organize files in accordance with City records‑management guidelines.
  • Manage electronic correspondence received through email, text, chat, and social media platforms; update and maintain the library’s website and social media platforms.
  • Perform original and copy cataloging of all library materials using the Integrated Library System (ILS); apply Library of Congress subject headings, the Dewey Decimal System, AACR2, RDA, and OCLC manuals; maintain authority control; troubleshoot bibliographic and ILS software problems; and collaborate with the Assistant Library Director, vendors, and IT staff.
  • Collaborate with librarians to develop and revise cataloging policies and procedures; maintain authority records and perform maintenance of bibliographic and authority records.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, including varied shifts on weekends and evenings, and observe all safety rules and procedures.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of standard mathematical and grammatical practices, print and electronic resources, the Internet, Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel), standard library principles and technology.
  • Knowledge of cataloging and classification procedures, standard library procedures and functions, computer input/output, Integrated Library Systems, OCLC, RDI, MARC Bibliographic formats.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; work with the public in a courteous and pleasant manner; respond professionally during stressful situations; work independently and collaboratively.
  • Operate standard office equipment including computer, calculator, copier, printer, fax machine, and document scanner; utilize specialized library technology; read, sort, and shelve library materials; prepare standard reports and spreadsheets with Microsoft software; maintain confidentiality of customer accounts; follow instructions; establish and maintain complex records and files; build effective working relationships with co‑workers and the general public.
  • Physical ability to bend, squat, lift, push, pull, and maneuver up to 35 lbs., and move freely around the library to locate materials and read shelves.
Acceptable Experience and Training
  • High school diploma or equivalent; college coursework preferred.
  • Microsoft Office knowledge and cash handling experience required.
  • Two years of supervisory and customer service experience preferred.
  • Training or experience working in a library setting or an equivalent combination of education and experience preferred.
Certificates and Licenses Required
  • Valid Texas Driver’s License.

Starting Salary: $21.70 per hour
