Automotive Technician II

Ensures the city's vehicles and equipment are maintained in good working condition. Involves repairing and maintaining mechanical and automotive equipment.

Responsibilities
  • Perform tune‑ups, oil changes, battery checks, tire and lubrication checks, and other preventive maintenance on city automotive and mechanical equipment.
  • Test drive vehicles and equipment.
  • Diagnose engine and mechanical problems using a diagnostic scanner.
  • Assist in maintaining detailed vehicle maintenance records.
  • Repair clutches and brakes on city vehicles and equipment.
  • Remove engines and transmissions for repair.
  • General knowledge of removal and repair of rear axle assemblies, gears or replacement.
  • General knowledge of large equipment including diesel engine repair and maintenance.
  • Provide own set of tools (full set).
  • May be subject to after‑hour calls.
  • May perform some welding work and acetylene cutting.
  • May operate other city vehicles as well as equipment (pick‑up and delivery).
  • May attend educational seminars.
  • Perform such other duties as may be assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Thorough knowledge of auto mechanics and the operation and repair of small and heavy equipment.
  • General knowledge of all automotive repair (water pumps, alternators, power steering pumps, air brakes, etc.) and removal and repair of rear ends.
  • Physical ability to lift and maneuver up to 80 lbs. (e.g., battery, bucket, etc.) and ascend and descend 30" high steps numerous times per day.
  • Ability to operate heavy equipment (pick‑up and delivery). Repair hydraulic systems, engines, and heavy equipment; read wiring diagrams; diagnose minor mechanical problems; repair vehicles; work with a variety of hand and power tools.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with co‑workers and other departments' personnel.
  • Maintain a Texas driver's license (applicable to job responsibilities) and good driving record.
Acceptable Experience and Training

High school graduation, or its equivalent, plus training as a mechanic, and at least four years of experience in automotive repair, or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Certificates and Licenses Required

State of Texas Class B (commercial) driver's license (obtainable within one year).
