Position Type:
Skilled Trades/ Electrician

Under general supervision performs skilled mechanical and electrical work in the installation, maintenance and repair of electrical systems and equipment. May exercise supervision over assigned staff. Work is performed independently in accordance with established operating procedures.

Examples of Work
  • Oversees installation, maintenance and repair of lift station equipment;
  • Reviews construction design plans for electrical equipment to ensure that the design meets City standards, provides comments and suggests corrective action to solve design failures;
  • Trains and directs assigned lift station employees;
  • Oversees safe handling of tools, equipment and materials for those under his/her direction;
  • Mentors helpers in safety principles and actions;
  • Installs, alters, repairs, and maintains motors, generators, motor controllers, panel boxes, transformers and wiring systems;
  • Performs preventive maintenance, troubleshoots and repairs all aspects of City electrical systems, pumps, motors, monitoring equipment, etc.;
  • Troubleshoots electrical systems to diagnose electrical problems and performs required repairs;
  • Installs, alters, repairs, and maintains special metering, control, tele-metering and recording equipment used in water and sewage treatment plants;
  • Makes estimates of required time and materials needed to complete assigned jobs;
  • May install electrical hook-ups for special events;
  • Responds to emergency calls for various types of electrical shut-downs and failures;
  • Installs and performs general repair and maintenance of lighting systems, fixtures, and equipment;
  • May assist City Engineer with plan reviews;
  • Troubleshoots electrical problems within a lift station to include the wiring, controller, pumps, main disconnects, transfer switches, relay's and any other electrical components associated with lift stations;
  • Performs minor repairs on lift stations according to manufacturers' specifications and departmental policies and procedures, e.g. replaces packing in pumps and valves, replaces bearings in motors and pumps, and replaces wiring;
  • Maintains various mechanical maintenance and repair records and logs;
  • May pull electrical work permit for jobs being performed;
  • Prepares and submits departmental forms and paperwork;
Other Important Duties

Performs such other duties as may be assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of:
City, State and National electrical codes; the tools, materials, methods and procedures used in the electrical trade; maintenance of lift stations according to manufacturer's specifications; general methods of electric and mechanical repairs; control panels, programmable logic controllers and instrumentation; occupational hazards and safety standards of the electrical trade including working with high voltage; and mechanical principles of pumps, controllers, motor chain drives and lift stations.

Knowledge of various municipal operations including Water, Wastewater Treatment, and/or Water Distribution/Wastewater Collection systems preferred.

Demonstrated Ability to: perform skilled mechanical work independently; read and interpret basic maps, blueprints and schematics; utilize special electrical tools such as voltmeters, ammeters, insulation testing meters, and circuit testers; and communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

Physical Ability to:
Lift and maneuver equipment and materials weighing up to 92 lbs. (i.e. meters, meter lids, pipe valves, etc.).

Ability to: work under general supervision and follow oral and written instructions; operate and maintain a variety of power and manual tools and equipment; operate standard office equipment including personal computer and associated software; establish and maintain effective working relationships with other city employees; maintain Texas driver's license (applicable to job responsibilities) and good driving record, and be able to lawfully report for emergency duty from residence within 30 minutes.

Other: may handle toxic and/or hazardous materials or work in areas where such materials may be stored.

Acceptable Experience and Training

H.S. diploma/GED, plus two years' experience…
