Position: Security Guard/ School of Discovery (2026-2027)
School Security Officer
Position is responsible for maintaining order and discipline, preventing crime, investigating student violations of school board policies, and detaining students violating the law or school board policies on school property or at school-sponsored events and is responsible solely for ensuring the safety, security, and welfare of all students, faculty, staff, and visitors in the assigned school. Position assists the administrative staff with enforcing policies and procedures for safe and orderly schools at the building level.

Qualifications:
Must possess a high school diploma (or equivalency) with some experience or training in a security related field or any equivalent combination of education and experience that would provide the noted knowledge, skills, and abilities. Must possess knowledge of, and the ability to apply, standard security procedures and best practices. Must possess the ability to acquire knowledge of School Board policies and procedures and Student Rights and Responsibilities.
Security experience in a public school setting preferred. Must possess the ability to read, write, speak and understand standard English. Must have basic computer skills using Microsoft Office programs. Completion of college-level courses in the area of security, psychology, emergency management, or criminal justice preferred. Must possess excellent human relations skills and an acceptable background clearance.
Salary:
To be determined commensurate with local salary schedule, credentials, and experience.
Essential Functions:
Patrols and monitors assigned areas of the school buildings, grounds and parking lots to deter, detect, report and stop violations of the law and/or school board policies.Detects, investigates and reports unauthorized or suspicious persons, vehicles and activities.Assists administrators and staff in crisis and emergency situations.Supervises and directs pupil movement.Notifies the administrative staff, police, fire department, or other appropriate authorities of security or emergency situations.Operates metal detectors and conducts searches when directed to do so.Investigates student violations of school board policies and prepare reports of the results.Works with school administrators and law enforcement officials in handling serious student offenses and law violations.Testifies in court and at Due Process hearings as required.Assists with fire drills and other emergency building evacuations.Supervises classroom behavior in lieu of faculty.Maintains security records, logs and reports.Attends and successfully completes all staff development training as required by state law or directed by the District.Abides by Security Department guidelines, directives and post orders.Reads and responds to email communications.Models nondiscriminatory practices in all activities.Operates a vehicle equipped with a manual or automatic transmission to drive safely in all traffic conditions.Performs other duties as assigned.General Responsibilities:
Ability to successfully conduct security patrols without direct supervision.Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.Ability to complete routine paperwork.Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle.Ability to understand and follow specific instructions and procedures.Strong interpersonal skills, flexibility, and customer service orientation.Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.Skill in performing building security and lock procedures.Knowledge of public security codes, policies, and regulations.Ability to understand, follow, and enforce safety codes, regulations, and procedures.Skill in providing protection services to individuals on campus.Ability to detect problems and report information to appropriate personnel.Terms of Employment:
Ten-month position in accordance with Board approved salary schedule.
Evaluation:
Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the State Department of Education and/or Selma City School's policy on evaluation of certified personnel.
