Job Purpose

To manage store operations to achieve maximum sales and profit while minimizing labor costs and maintaining optimum store conditions.

Job Responsibilities
  • Manage the store so that every customer receives prompt, courteous, and friendly service.
  • Attain sales, profit, expense, and labor budgets.
  • Review department budgets at each period end.
  • Know the budgeted inventory level of each department and work with Department Managers to achieve them.
  • Know the standards of performance and productivity for each department in the store, and work with Department Managers to achieve them.
  • Determine needs in the store by performing a store walk, at least daily, including the back room, and communicate needs of each area to Department Managers and Assistant Store Managers.
  • Perform a store walk with the next associate in charge at the end of the shift to communicate needs.
  • Complete and review all reports: shrink, productivity, ad markdown, DSD price changes, display performance, out‑of‑stocks, safety store audit, transfers, credits, and reclaim as required.
  • Perform/direct ordering of merchandise and supplies on schedule from the warehouse and authorized vendors, and receiving and handling of merchandise and supplies.
  • Perform/direct an outstanding store condition program and maintenance, back door and front‑end security procedures, and store safety and fire prevention program.
  • Direct that all DSD products are authorized, checked in properly, recorded in the DSD System/Price Book, and SRP updated on the front‑end systems.
  • Assure that all merchandise is checked out at the correct price and price changes are properly completed on the front‑end system and shelf tags.
  • Assure prompt and accurate service at the front end and service departments by supervising training, scheduling personnel, and handling all customer requests or complaints with courtesy.
  • Conduct store meetings to review merchandising, sales planning, and operating problems.
  • Perform/supervise selection, hiring, training, and scheduling of store employees and review schedules with each department head.
  • Evaluate employee performances regularly (at least once a year), recognize outstanding performance, recommend promotion, and take action with underperformers.
Qualifications
  • Ability to give/receive complex verbal instructions and use equipment.
  • Ability to read and write English, read instructions, labels, codes, reports, and forms.
  • Decision making on merchandise placement, pricing, shelf allocation, scheduling, expense control, hiring, merchandising plans, policies, and sales promotion.
  • Good interpersonal communication skills.
  • Knowledge of regulations and laws that apply to the operation of the business:
    Wage & Hour, Family Medical Leave Act, OSHA, ADA, EEO, Standard, Nutrition Labeling & Education Act, Weights and Measures, etc.
Preferred
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Prior grocery store experience.
  • Prior experience as a store manager.
  • Tasks of the Job
  • Mobility: move while conducting training and orientation of personnel, approximately 100 yards; supervise receiving of product, moving product to floor or storage, opening/cutting cases, inspecting quality, sorting, building displays, allocating space, ordering merchandise and supplies, cleaning and maintenance, removing trash, price marking and signage, approximately 100 yards; work on tile or concrete for a maximum of 8 hours.
  • Perform the same tasks as any employee while substituting as part of the crew or training program for new employees.
  • Recognize cases, case cutter edge, case strips, shelf location, product size/description/quality, customers, shelf tags, labels on products, stocking carts, knives, scale, wrapper, department production equipment, cooler layout, packaging materials, debris on floor, aisle markers, and signs.
  • Perceive color difference on product and product labels.
  • Recognize cleaning/maintenance equipment, pallet jacks, forklifts, ovens, mixers, slicers, meat grinder, baler controls, etc.
  • Respond to customer, co‑workers, and vendor questions, comments, and responses.
  • Respond to the sound of baler/pallet jack/forklift/cleaning equipment operation.
  • Use and respond to the intercom or phone system.
  • Read case labels, signs, tags, shelf signs, numbers, aisle markers, department forms, operational forms, reports, and employment forms.
  • Read equipment and chemical warning labels.
  • Work Environment

    Inside and outside work with extreme variations in temperature, dust, and humidity.
