Maintenance Manager

The Maintenance and Engineering Manager leads the maintenance and engineering functions to ensure the facility and production equipment are properly designed, maintained, and operated to safely perform specified tasks in a cost-effective manner. This role oversees capital project identification and execution, preventive maintenance programs, equipment reliability, and facility integrity, while ensuring compliance with safety, environmental, and regulatory requirements. The position provides strategic direction, technical expertise, and hands-on leadership to optimize equipment utilization, reduce downtime, and support continuous improvement across the plant.

Provide leadership and direction for the plant's maintenance and engineering functions, with a strong focus on preventive maintenance, equipment reliability, and cost-effective operation.

  • Develop and implement maintenance strategies that maximize equipment utilization, minimize downtime, and support safe, efficient production.
  • Identify, justify, and execute capital projects and major maintenance activities, including need definition, technical specifications, vendor evaluation, and project management through completion.
  • Monitor machine performance, repair history, and downtime trends to plan and execute effective preventive and predictive maintenance activities.
  • Manage the maintenance stockroom inventory to ensure availability of critical parts while controlling costs and optimizing inventory levels.
  • Directly supervise maintenance mechanics, a controls technician, and an engineer, providing day-to-day leadership, work prioritization, and technical guidance.
  • Serve as the subject matter expert for electrical, mechanical, and basic PLC systems, supporting troubleshooting, repairs, and continuous improvement of equipment and processes.
  • Perform full supervisory responsibilities, including recruiting, hiring, coaching, counseling, discipline, performance appraisals, promotions, and goal setting for maintenance personnel.
  • Develop, justify, and manage the departmental operating budget, ensuring costs remain within approved limits and align with overall business objectives.
  • Understand and apply the relationship between equipment performance, maintenance activities, capital projects, and overall cost of goods sold.
  • Lead and support initiatives in energy management, waste minimization, vibration analysis, process and machine troubleshooting, failure analysis, and equipment design, fabrication, and installation.
  • Ensure the physical facility is maintained in a safe, functional, and cost-effective condition to support production and other plant activities.
  • Ensure all equipment meets required safety characteristics and complies with applicable regulations and standards from agencies such as OSHA and NFPA, as well as insurance and industrial safety requirements.
  • Monitor environmental discharges such as air emissions, noise, and sewer effluents to ensure appropriate permits are in place and all emissions remain within prescribed limits.
  • Interface with other plant departments to identify, justify, and execute projects that improve safety, reduce manufacturing costs, increase productivity, and enhance the repair and reliability of equipment and facilities.
  • Serve as the plant's engineering expert, advising plant management, departmental leaders, line supervisors, and other personnel on equipment design, functioning, and process improvements.
  • Collaborate with production, quality, and technical service teams to improve process performance through justified equipment modifications and changes.
  • Support corporate and centralized functions such as R&D, Purchasing, and Central Engineering by providing insights into equipment capabilities and limitations as they relate to product and process requirements.
  • Design and implement administrative systems that improve maintenance and engineering effectiveness and address organizational functional issues.
  • Prepare clear, concise technical reports, letters, and memoranda to document projects, issues, and recommendations.
  • Deliver effective oral presentations and communications to employees and management regarding maintenance plans, projects, performance, and initiatives.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable legal and regulatory requirements related to personnel practices, environmental regulations, safety, and vendor contracts.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support plant operations, safety, and continuous improvement.

Proven experience in maintenance management and supervision within an industrial or manufacturing environment.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage and lead maintenance technicians, including a controls technician and an engineer, with responsibility for their development and performance.
  • Strong knowledge of engineering principles and fundamentals, including hydraulics, pneumatics, thermodynamics, and electronics.
