Mervin Manufacturing was founded by snowboarders Mike Olson and Pete Saari in 1977. In an industry where virtually every other snowboard, ski and surfboard company has moved production to China or offshore, Mervin is the longest running and last major board building factory in the USA.
Based out of Carlsborg, Washington, between the rugged Olympic and Cascade Mountain Ranges, Mervin is a direct link between riding and manufacturing.
Salary Range: $20.40 To $23.85 Hourly
Job Purpose:Finishing involves completing the various steps required to make a snowboard ready to ship. They need to be able to operate and adjust several different types of equipment used in the process. Finishers are also looked to for assistance in the Quality Control process. As the first people to see the boards after they have been pressed, they are in the best position to check several aspects of the boards such as banana height, base contour, flex, lamination, insert sizes, etc.
Duties & Responsibilities:- Retrieve boards from Lay-Up department.
- Cut out to general shape with band saw.
- Grind off all excess material from perimeter of the snowboard with “deflash” machine.
- Smooth out tip and tail using same machine with finer sanding belt.
- Access the inserts by drilling through the top material and fiberglass.
- Tap threads if necessary, to remove resin and to make sure threads are clean.
- Bevel tip and tail using a file or angle die-grinder.
- Bevel sidewalls using table-mounted router.
- Grind the base by hand using Reichmann belt grinder.
- Polish the steel and sidewalls with fine grit belt and Scotch-Brite belt on side-sanding machine.
- Use power-feed base grinder to put finish on base using progressively finer belts, 120 grit, 150 grit, 180 grit, and Scotch-Brite.
- Apply wax using a power-feed waxing machine.
- Buff wax using a Reichmann belt grinder fitted with a waxing belt.
- Scrape excess material from the top edge of the board.
- Apply the proper stickers.
- Deliver boards to Q.C. for quality inspection.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Strong communication skills are required as the finishing technicians are an important part of the QC process.
- Must be able to perform the physical requirements of the job repetitively.
- Must be able to follow written and verbal instructions.
- Adaptable to minor alterations in daily routine. Not all steps must be performed in the same order so each finishing technician is expected to alter their routine to take advantage of the open work areas and equipment.
- Will be working with hands 100% of the time. Strong eye-hand coordination is a plus.
- Experience with power tools is a plus.
- Self-motivated with excellent attention to detail.
- Required to regularly stand and walk
- Frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms
- Occasionally required to climb and balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and smell
- Regularly required to assist and lift up to 65 pounds.
- Frequently required to assist and lift up to 50 pounds.
- Vision requirements include close vision and distance vision
Position Hours are Monday
- Thursday 5:00am-3:30pm
Pay Range: $20.40 to $23.85 per hour
Starting rate is $20.40/hr with a $1.80/hr increase once fully trained and meeting quality and quota expectations. The position is based on a tiered pay scale with increased knowledge and abilities for each tier associated with an increase in wage.
