Estate & Tax Planning Attorney / Trusts and Estates - General Attorney in Serangoon Garden Estate, Singapore (General)

Job Title:

AVP/VP, Private Trust Business Development Manager, Private Banking, Consumer Banking Group

1. General

Summary:

  • Analyze trust documents for legal, tax, administrative, and investment issues, and coordinate service delivery.
  • Make recommendations on the exercise of discretionary powers by the Trustee.
  • Apply comprehensive knowledge of trust law and administration to client-specific planning and administration.
  • Collaborate with Group Legal & Compliance, external lawyers, and professional advisors to resolve tax and legal issues.
  • Address inquiries from beneficiaries, power holders, protectors, and their advisors.
  • Work independently and within a team-based environment.
  • Ensure consistent application of Trustee and Bank policies and procedures, and represent the department at governance and oversight committees.
  • Partner with clients' other advisors, such as attorneys and accountants.

2. New Business Acceptance:

  • Handle inquiries from Wealth Planners and Relationship Managers on pipelines and proposed trust structures.
  • Maintain and update a library of onboarding documents and guidelines.
  • Review legal/tax opinions and amendments to trust deeds and other documents, liaising with Wealth Planners and professional advisors on proposed amendments.
  • Highlight key points of trust structures and legal/tax opinions to Trust Managers and Trust Operations for proper execution and administration.
  • Maintain a Register of Pipelines and prepare regular updates and reports on prospects for management.
  • Attend new trust handover meetings to clarify customized structures and highlight special administration or accounting requirements.

3. Support Trust Administration:

  • Maintain trust administration templates and draft amendments for customized transactions and structures.
  • Provide guidance to Trust Managers and Trust Operations on structures requiring special handling for legal, regulatory, accounting, or tax matters, liaising with professional advisors as necessary.
  • Liaise with Legal & Compliance and external lawyers, guiding Trust Managers on action steps for complaints, litigation, and disputes.
  • Coordinate ad-hoc projects to address changes in legal, regulatory, and tax landscapes.
  • Assist in coordinating and supporting trust company governance functions, such as semi-annual board meetings and regular sub-committee meetings.

4. Knowledge Centre:

  • Monitor and analyze legal, regulatory, and tax changes impacting trust structures and administration.
  • Liaise with Group Legal & Compliance and external advisors to obtain professional advice and finalize action steps for new and existing trusts.
  • Train and educate Trust Managers and Trust Operations on changes affecting trust administration processes.
  • Maintain a library of technical resources including legal advice and training slides.

Education and Experience Information:

  • A bachelor’s degree in Law.
  • At least 4 to 8 years of post‑qualification experience, either with law firms in private wealth or trust practice, or with financial institutions engaged in wealth management/private banking.
  • Strong drafting and analytical skills, organized and motivated.
  • Strong risk awareness and sound risk management skills.
  • Ability to work in a team as well as independently.
  • Confidence in dealing with all levels of management throughout the bank.
  • Ability to demonstrate clear commercial application of legal and regulatory knowledge, and to balance legal or regulatory risks against commercial needs.
