About Us
9
Box is a fractional People Operations consultancy. We embed senior People leaders directly into growing companies - professional sports organizations, CPG brands, and venture-backed technology startups, and do the work alongside them.
Our model is deliberately different from traditional HR consulting. We don't deliver a deck and disappear, and we don't build dependency. We come in as practitioners, solve the problem in front of us, leave the client's team stronger than we found it, and earn expanded scope by demonstrating value. Our name comes from the 9-box talent grid - a reflection of how we think about people: honestly, on two axes, without flattening anyone into a single score.
We're innovative and problem-solvers - driving impact through process changes.
This is a contractor role starting at 20 hours/week.
The RoleWe're hiring a Senior HRBP to support multiple client engagements concurrently. This is hands-on work. You'll be the People partner for founders, executives, and functional leaders who need real judgment on real problems - not frameworks in the abstract.
You'll move between clients in a single week, which means switching context between a fast-scaling CPG brand and a gaming organization without dropping quality in either. The best people in this role are energized by that variety rather than exhausted by it. We believe in servant leadership and finding ways to remove obstacles from clients, not create additional ones.
What You'll Do Employee Relations- Own investigations end to end: intake, plan, interviews, documentation, findings, and recommendation
- Advise managers and executives on performance concerns, conduct issues, and difficult conversations before they escape
- Handle separations, severance analysis, and separation agreements in partnership with counsel
- Serve as a credible, neutral point of contact for employees raising concerns
- Flag legal and reputational exposure early and clearly, without alarmism
- Build and improve the operational infrastructure clients are missing — onboarding, offboarding, policy, documentation, and process
- Manage or support HRIS work, including implementations and migrations
- Ensure compliance across multi-state (and occasionally international) employment contexts
- Create the templates, trackers, and playbooks that let a client's internal team run the process after we've handed it off
- Design and run performance cycles, calibration sessions, and talent reviews
- Coach managers — especially first-time and rapidly promoted ones — through feedback, goal setting, and team leadership
- Build development plans, career frameworks, and manager enablement content
- Advise executives directly, including on their own leadership and team dynamics
- Benchmark roles and build compensation bands appropriate to stage, sector, and geography
- Support merit and bonus cycles, including modeling and approval workflows
- Advise on equity structure, offer construction, and negotiation strategy
- Evaluate and recommend benefits programs against cost and competitiveness
- 8+ years in HR, with at least 4 in a true HRBP or People Partner capacity supporting executives
- Demonstrated depth in all four areas above. This role does not work as a specialist
- Practitioner-level command of U.S. employment law, with real fluency in at least one of California or Texas, and comfort operating across multiple state jurisdictions
- Track record supporting fast-growth or scaling organizations — Series A through C or an equivalent inflection point
- Excellent written work product. Much of what you produce here goes to a board, a founder, or c-suite leaders
- Sound independent judgment. You'll frequently be the most senior People voice in the room, without an internal team behind you. You'll never be alone, but will be empowered to make decisions in the moment
- Discretion appropriate to sensitive, high-stakes, and occasionally board-level matters
- Prior consulting, fractional, or interim People leadership experience
- Experience with Rippling or Gusto and a willingness to learn
- Exposure to international employment matters, particularly UK
