AVTEC Instructor: Maritime Department Head

Maritime Instructor/Department Head (

Location:

Seward, Alaska). The Department of Labor and Workforce Development, Division of AVTEC is recruiting. No cover letter required.

Oversee the planning, development, and delivery of training programs for the Alaska Maritime Training Center (AMTC). Optimize use of assessment and training technologies, including fire trainer and full mission bridge simulator. Provide direct supervision of six full‑time instructors and several adjunct instructors. Lead the maritime advisory board, grant initiatives, special projects, and serve on the AVTEC leadership team.

• Four years of journey‑level trade experience in the applicable field;
• OR:
  Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college in the applicable field and two years of journey‑level trade experience and two years of professional experience developing, coordinating, and presenting adult training or vocational education programs;
• OR:
  Industry‑recognized professional certification in the applicable field, two years of journey‑level trade experience, and two years of professional experience developing, coordinating, and presenting adult training or vocational education programs.
• Specialized experience in maritime operations or safety, medical services, construction, culinary arts, business or office technology, applied technology, or information technology is required.

• Education and Training – Knowledge of teaching, training, research, presentations, testing, and other instructional methods.
• Leadership – Influence, motivate, and challenge others; adapt leadership styles to a variety of situations.
• Oral Communication – Deliver clear and convincing oral presentations; listen effectively.
• Written Communication – Produce clear, concise, organized, and convincing written materials.
• Manages Human Resources – Plan, distribute, and monitor work assignments; evaluate performance and provide feedback.
• Training expertise – Complete a U.S. Coast Guard approved Train the Trainer course.
• Stakeholder collaboration – Work with pilot organizations, vessel operators, U.S. Coast Guard, harbor authorities, and training institutions.
• Budget & staffing management – Manage department budget, staffing, and contract training arrangements.
• Outreach – Expand AVTEC’s presence and recruit new students through educational institutions and industry representatives.
• Program management – Develop and manage course schedules, space, and equipment for training.
• Compliance & reporting – Maintain advisory committee, record keeping of course approvals, audits, and renewal timelines.
• Performance coaching and disciplinary action.

• Experience with developing, drafting, editing, or submitting updates on U.S. Coast Guard training courses.

• Valid driver’s license.
• Pass comprehensive background investigation including criminal history check.
