Equipment Operator – Special Collection Truck Driver

The special collection truck driver performs difficult skilled work in the refuse division. The crew member will operate a hook truck and/or other refuse equipment, perform manual tasks associated with the backyard collection and recycling of white goods, furniture and general rubbish and large/bulk items, and undertake other manual tasks in connection with related service operations as required. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Refuse/Recycling Superintendent or Refuse Labor Crew Leader.

This position may involve picking up special pickups five days per week and will perform other duties during downtimes. Scheduling is based on need and is subject to change.

This is a Union position with a split pay code. Union members receive Pay code 9 when performing special pickups and Pay code 7 when operating a scooter on the task system.

This is heavy work that requires the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. The job involves climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, and repetitive motions. Vocal communication is required for exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word;

hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for depth perception, peripheral vision, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arm’s length, operation of machines and motor vehicles, and analyzing written or computer data.

Work may occur in inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, hazards, atmospheric conditions, oils, and may require wearing a respirator.

Essential Functions/Typical Tasks:
  • Operates the hook truck, skid steer, and scooter.
  • Performs maintenance and makes minor mechanical repairs to equipment.
  • Discusses job requirements, makes recommendations, and receives detailed instructions from supervisor.
  • Ensures quality and quantity of special pick‑up operation.
  • Safely and efficiently operates equipment within control.
  • Complies with safety standards and policies.
  • Maintains records as required.
  • Performs and/or assists in performing other functions as required.
  • Helps to train subordinates.
  • Understands simple oral and written directions.
  • Interacts with the public on a routine basis.
  • Performs related tasks as required.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Thorough knowledge of the operation and preventive maintenance requirements of all equipment used in special pick‑up activities; knowledge of the tools, materials, and equipment used; awareness of occupational hazards and safety precautions; ability to assign and supervise the work of others; ability to prepare simple reports; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the public; dependability; good work and attendance record.

Education and Experience:

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to high school graduation and considerable experience in the maintenance, operation, repair, and/or construction of public works utilities and related facilities.

Special Requirements :

Possession of a valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License with air brake endorsement is required. Ability to operate a hydraulic boom truck.
