Job Summary

The Clerk of Scales shall be responsible for the security, regulation, and control of the jockey's room. The Clerk of Scales must be able to work with the Equibase Hybrid Timing System. Responsible for supporting the Company's mission, vision, and values by providing an unparalleled experience of fun and entertainment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Lead by example.
  • Responsible for maintaining a high degree of hospitality, as well as a positive and professional demeanor at all times.
  • Creates high levels of morale, fosters teamwork, inspires collaboration, and provides suggestions for growth to management.
  • Verify the presence of all jockeys in the jockey's room at the appointed time
  • Verify the correct weight of each jockey at the time of weighing out and weighing in and report any discrepancies to the Stewards
  • Oversee security of jockeys' room including the conduct of the jockeys and valets
  • Record all required data on the scale sheet and submit that data to the Horseperson's Bookkeeper at the end of each race
  • Maintain record of applicable winning races on all apprentice certificates at the meet
  • Inform Live Racing Operator of scratches, jockey changes and over weights
  • Responsible for daily set-up of Equibase Hybrid System timing tags and must be able to communicate properly with other individuals regarding operation of the Hybrid Timing System.
  • Assume the duties of the Jockey Room Custodian in the absence of such employee
Supervision
  • Silks Attendant and Racing Valets
Required Qualifications
  • High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent
  • At least One (1) year of experience as a Clerk of Scales
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with numerous responsibilities.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to interact professionally with jockeys and Racing Valets
  • Ability to maintain a calm, composed presence in an often challenging environment where multiple tasks and events may occur simultaneously.
  • The highest of moral integrity and a strong work ethic.
  • Must be able to pass Canterbury Park’s pre-employment screening which includes a criminal background check and verification of work history.
  • Must be able to attain a Minnesota Racing Commission (MRC) license.
  • Must be registered with the Horse racing Integrity and Safety Authority (HISA) as a Covered Person.

  • Maintain a flexible working schedule, which may include nights and weekends during the live race season May - September.
  • While performing the essential functions of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand, walk and sit throughout the assigned shift.
  • Must use a personal cell phone for proper communication regarding the Equibase Hybrid Timing System.
  • Must be able to lift up to 40 lbs.
  • Requires frequent wrist and hand use.
