Hiring Range: $83,220 - $97,909

Full Pay Range: $78,323.02 - $

Job Summary

Performs responsible, skilled nursing duties through assessment, screening, education, and delegated medical functions in a secure correctional institution setting. Provides professional care, counseling, and guidance to individuals and groups to improve the health and welfare of the inmate population. Works day and evening shifts, weekends, and holidays.

Essential Duties
  • Provides skilled nursing care to the inmate population, ensuring their medical needs are met with an appropriate level of care.
  • Promotes and maintains health of individuals and the jail community through assessment, education, counseling, and preventive measures.
  • Reviews intake health forms, conducts intake assessments, and initiates medical screening as needed.
  • Performs physical and mental health assessments; reports findings and initiates treatments per standing orders or physician consultation.
  • Makes arrangements for further health care, including appointments for dental, medical, psychological, laboratory, and other modalities.
  • Prepares medication carts for distribution, educates inmates and staff on side effects or allergic reactions, and orders medication refills.
  • Performs inventory and orders over‑the‑counter medications and supplies.
  • Maintains medical records of treatments and provides discharge instructions and referrals as necessary.
  • Institutes communicable disease screening, reports cases, and collaborates with staff to isolate inmates per policy.
  • Participates in staff meetings and stays current with correctional health nursing trends through training and study.
  • Responds to medical emergencies in the jail facility when on duty.
  • Reviews case files and recommends improvements to jail medical services.
  • Shares after‑hours on‑call duties with other nursing staff.
  • Works required days and hours to perform all assigned responsibilities; remains available to communicate with staff, supervisors, vendors, and relevant parties.
  • Performs other related duties as required or assigned.
Minimum Qualifications

Registered Nurse licensed in Minnesota. Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation required.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with disease‑prevention, corrections or institutional nursing, mental health or psychiatric nursing, and triage skills.

Supervisory Controls

Under operations and security supervision from the Jail Administrator and Corrections Lieutenant; medical guidance from the County’s Medical Director and Nursing Team Leader. Performs with independent judgment consistent with MN Nurse Practice Act and established protocols.

Work Environment and Physical Demands

Inside work in correctional and infirmary settings; multi‑task oriented with periods of stress. Requirements include evening, weekend, and on‑call shifts. Potential exposure to blood‑borne pathogens, airborne pathogens, antibiotic‑resistant wounds, verbal abuse, and inmate behaviors. Physical activities involve reaching, standing, walking, light lifting up to 35 pounds, and repetitive motions. In emergencies, demands increase.
