Job Description

Sharon High School is seeking a dedicated and passionate full‑time American Sign Language (ASL) teacher to join our collaborative World Languages and Cultures Department. The ideal candidate is an enthusiastic educator capable of teaching students across a range of proficiency levels, from Novice Low to Intermediate Mid. A valid Massachusetts teaching license in American Sign Language is required. Our department follows the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines and embraces proficiency‑based, communicative approaches to language instruction, including visual and interactive strategies that support ASL acquisition.

The ideal candidate is also someone eager to plan and support cultural learning opportunities, events, or exchanges related to the Deaf community. Key Responsibilities
  • Instructional Planning and Delivery
    • Design and implement engaging, standards‑based ASL lessons.
    • Differentiate instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners.
    • Incorporate visual communication strategies aligned with ACTFL proficiency targets.
    • Use a variety of instructional tools and technologies to support language development.
  • Assessment and Evaluation
    • Develop and administer formative and summative assessments aligned with proficiency goals.
    • Provide timely, constructive feedback and maintain accurate records of student progress.
  • Classroom Management
    • Create a positive, inclusive, and safe classroom environment.
    • Apply effective classroom management strategies that support engagement and respect.
  • Collaboration and Communication
    • Collaborate with World Languages and Cultures colleagues to ensure curriculum alignment and instructional coherence where appropriate.
    • Communicate regularly with students, families, and staff using appropriate tools and platforms.
    • Support department initiatives including cultural events related to ASL and Deaf studies.
  • Professional Growth
    • Participate in professional development to enhance ASL pedagogy and stay current with ACTFL standards and DESE guidance.
Required Qualifications
  • Valid Massachusetts educator license in American Sign Language (5–12).
  • Proven experience teaching ASL at the secondary level.
  • Knowledge of ACTFL proficiency standards and proficiency‑based instruction.
  • Commitment to culturally responsive and inclusive teaching practices.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience integrating Deaf culture into curriculum and school‑wide events.
  • Proficiency in using technology to support visual language learning.
  • Background in developing thematic, proficiency‑based ASL curriculum.
