The Construction Inspector position is a technical role responsible for non-professional engineering work. The primary responsibilities are inspection and construction management of public improvements on Capital Improvement Projects (CIP) throughout the City. The position ensures City construction standards and specifications are followed throughout the project. Secondary duties may include inspection of stormwater facilities, observation of traffic operations, and traffic data collection.
This position reports to the Inspection Manager and works closely with the CIP project managers and engineers. Construction Inspectors are also provided the following benefits:
- Cell Phone Allowance - $31 per pay period
- Uniform clothing and PPE - City issued as needed
Conducts field inspections for installations of streets and curbs, storm sewer systems, roadway subgrade, and concrete flatwork to ensure compliance with City construction standards and specifications. Attends pre-construction and progress meetings for assigned projects. Performs complex construction or utility problem solving.
Project MonitoringAssists in the review of construction plans during the design phase. Prepares daily inspection reports, measures quantities, and calculates pay estimates for assigned projects during the construction phase. Conducts wage rate interviews with contractors’ employees to ensure compliance with federal wages when necessary. Conducts walk-throughs and provides documentation during the punch list, final acceptance and two (2) year maintenance periods on projects.
QualityControl Testing
Completes and coordinates field testing of concrete, asphalt, and soils for compliance with construction standards.
SafetyFamiliarity with safety requirements of the job and general work area, and follows all safety procedures. Identifies and reports workplace hazards. Ensures that proper traffic control is established per the MUTCD on assigned projects.
Computer Knowledge and Math FundamentalsUnderstands word processing applications: can develop, edit or maintain databases, spreadsheets, and/or other specialized software. Understands and performs standard mathematical computations.
Technical AssistanceProvides technical assistance to other City departments as requested.
Stormwater InspectionParticipates in the inspection of stormwater facilities as part of the City’s pipe replacement program, stormwater projects, or as needed.
Pavement ManagementParticipates in the inspection of mill and overlay operations as part of the City’s annual pavement management program as needed.
Traffic OperationsObserves traffic operations as directed by the Traffic Engineer and responds to citizen inquiries as needed. Collects, organizes, and summarizes traffic data as required. Completes written reports as requested.
Emergency OperationsParticipates in snow removal, ice control and other emergency operations during off-duty times and during regular work hours.
Minimum QualificationsThe Construction Inspector is a Career Development position that includes a I, II, and Senior level, based on experience.
Minimum Qualifications for a Construction Inspector I
High School diploma or equivalent with additional course work in construction or civil engineering technology.
A minimum of one(1) year experience in non-professional construction inspection, engineering, or surveying.
A Commercial Driver’s License Class B or the ability to obtain one within 180 days of employment.
The hiring salary range for a Construction Inspector I begins at $24.50 per hour (DOQ).
Minimum Qualifications for a Construction Inspector II
High School diploma or equivalent with additional course work in construction or civil engineering technology.
A minimum of four (4) years' experience in non-professional construction inspection, engineering, or surveying.
A Commercial Driver’s License Class B or the ability to obtain one within 180 days of employment.
- Successful completion of the Kansas Department of Transportation Certified Inspection and Testing Training Program.
The hiring salary range for a Construction Inspector II begins at $26.25 per hour (DOQ).
