Position Summary & Responsibilities:

Position Summary:

This Professional Civil Engineer I position is located in Topeka, at the Eisenhower State Office Building, and is within the Bureau of Traffic Engineering. This position manages the permanent signing unit supervising engineering technicians. Is responsible for the design and review of permanent signing plans to keep projects on schedule, addressing initiatives involving permanent signing, implementing policies, and responding to requests from the public.

Administers the program for federal aid high performance signing projects.

Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:

* Provides engineering guidance to the permanent signing unit of the Signing Section. Directs and supervises an Engineering Associate, an Engineering Technician Specialist, and three (3) employees in the Engineering Technician progression within in the design and review of both preliminary and final plans for permanent signing.

* Reviews permanent signing plans prepared by others for conformance with current guidelines and standards. Makes contact to obtain the information for the preparation of these plans.

* Investigates new developments in permanent signing materials and applications to evaluate their feasibility for use in Kansas. Recommends changes to the permanent signing standards, policies, and/or specifications in order to incorporate new technologies.

* Expert on permanent signing and works with the Office of the Chief Counsel on lawsuits involving permanent signing.

* Coordinates the development, distribution, and updating of the Highway Sign Manual.

* Coordinates with the Department of Wildlife and Parks, Travel and Tourism Division on attraction signing.

* Attends various types of training and provides training and technical guidance for personnel under his/her supervision.
