Overview
The Kansas City VA Medical Center is recruiting for one Licensed Practical Nurse to join the Primary Care service line at the Shawnee VA Clinic - located in Shawnee, KS.
Responsibilities- Total rewards of a Allied Health Professional Major Duties include, but are not limited to: functioning at the top of his or her license
- Observing, recording, and reporting changes in the patient's condition
- Assisting in the development and revision of the patient-driven holistic life care plan
- Demonstrating active collaboration, communication and problem solving with Core Team (Patient, Primary Care Provider, RN Care Coordinator and Clerk) and Expanded Team (family/caregiver, internal and community-based services involved in providing care to the patient)
- Communicating and interacting appropriately and courteously with internal and external customers
- Maintaining confidentiality of patient/employee information electronically, verbally, and written
- Working in a safe manner including infection control and operation of equipment
- Integrating and applying pertinent aspects of the Medical Center performance improvement program into professional practice
- Utilizing nursing research, evidence-based practice, and literature in daily practice
- Providing care appropriate to the bio-psychosocial needs of the population served
- Understanding changes associated with aging and growth and development relevant to adults and geriatric populations
- Assessing and interpreting data related to the patient’s health status to deliver age-appropriate care
- Providing culturally competent care to a diverse patient population
- Maintaining required certifications, including Basic Life Support (BLS), and applicable ACLS/ATLS
- Establishing and maintaining professional relationships with patients and families to promote positive care delivery
- Performing prescribed medications and treatments as allowed by local policies and procedures, and documenting actions taken
- Observing patient responses to medications/treatments and reporting changes to the RN or MD/DO
- Recognizing urgent or emergent patient care needs and seeking appropriate assistance as directed
- Identifying and addressing equipment issues, safety hazards, and supply deficiencies
- Working under the general supervision of an RN or MD/DO with broad nursing responsibilities
- Demonstrating knowledge to perform standard nursing procedures with increasing complexity under supervision
- Serving as a preceptor or mentor to less experienced staff related to nursing support duties
- Seeking ongoing education to enhance nursing knowledge and practice
- Basic Requirements:
- United States Citizenship
- Non-citizens may be appointed when qualified citizens cannot be recruited per VA policy
- English Language Proficiency
- Education:
Graduate of a school of practical or vocational nursing approved by the appropriate State agency and/or NLNAC accreditation - Exceptions may include health care education in the military or equivalent licensing requirements
- Licensure:
Active, full, current, and unrestricted licensure as a Graduate LPN/LVN in the United States or District of Columbia - Grade Determinations:
In addition to basic requirements, the following criteria apply - GS-03:
None beyond the basic requirements - GS-04:
Six months of qualifying experience as an LPN/LVN or related acceptable experience - GS-04:
Graduation from an approved school and one year of related nursing care experience - GS-05:
Completion of at least one year of qualifying experience at GS-4 level or equivalent and demonstrated KSA's - GS-06:
Completion of at least one year of additional qualifying experience at GS-5 level or equivalent - Preferred Experience:
Two years of Primary Care or outpatient ambulatory care experience; IV certification - Reference: For more information, visit VA Qualification Standards
- Full performance level: GS-06; actual selection range: GS-03 to GS-06
- Functioning at the top of the LPN license capacity
- Observe, record, and report changes in patient condition
- Develop and revise patient-driven plans of care
- Collaborate with the Core Team and Expanded Team to coordinate patient care
- Maintain patient confidentiality and professional conduct
- Adhere to infection control and equipment safety standards
- Apply performance improvement and evidence-based practice in daily care
- Deliver culturally competent care and address age-specific needs
- Maintain required certifications (BLS, ACLS/ATLS as applicable)
- Work schedule:
Monday – Friday, any 8-hour shift between 6:45am and 4:30pm - Other benefits and employment details as described by VA policies
