Job Summary
The Veterans Home RN delivers professional nursing care in a long‑term care setting at the Michael J. Fitzmaurice State Veterans Home. The role focuses on providing quality healthcare to South Dakota veterans and their families while maintaining high standards of patient safety, record accuracy, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
Key Responsibilities
- Administer nursing care in accordance with established protocols and standards of practice.
- Maintain accurate and timely patient records and documentation.
- Operate a variety of medical equipment and perform clinical procedures.
- Communicate effectively with patients, families, and the healthcare team.
- Adhere to infection control, safety, and quality‑care guidelines.
Licenses and Certifications
Registered Nurse license in South Dakota required. No other licenses are mandatory, but continuing education and additional certifications are encouraged.
Ideal Candidate Profile
Registered Nurse License and associate, bachelor, or 3‑year nursing diploma. New graduates are welcome; on‑the‑job training provided. Candidates must procure all required certifications and perform any required assessments.
Knowledge and Ability
- Professional nursing theory and current practices applicable to long‑term care.
- Recent developments in the professional nursing field.
- Clinical procedures and application of nursing techniques.
- Record keeping, following instructions, operating medical equipment, and report writing.
- Maintaining a helpful and sympathetic attitude toward patients.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with patients and staff.

- Position is eligible for Veterans’ Preference per ARSD 55:10:02:08.
- Successful applicants will undergo a background investigation, abuse and neglect screening, and drug screening. Employment is conditional upon successful completion of these screenings.
