Position Summary & Responsibilities:

Position Summary:

* This position is responsible for assisting the Shift Supervisor (Captain) in leading any assigned shift. In the absence of the Shift Supervisor, the Assistant Shift Supervisor (Lieutenant) must remain ready to assume the duties of the Shift Supervisor. This position is expected to be proactive in identifying problems related to safety, morale, or fiscal areas. These may include the development of strategies, tactics, and identifying problems as well as implementing and measuring effectiveness of concepts that have been presented to, and approved by, the Major.

* This position is responsible for modeling the command and leadership philosophy to the shift's subordinate supervisors and to ensure all normal and routine shift functions are carried out as mandated, ordered, or directed per policy, procedure, or directives. This position will be responsible for the completion of performance evaluations of assigned sergeants and supervision of evaluations of all officers assigned to the shift.

Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:

* Responsible for all areas, staff and offenders assigned to Kansas Juvenile Corrections Complex. This extends to outside the facility when conducting official KJCC or KDOC business. Supervise correctional staff who maintain safety and security of juvenile offenders in their living units, at work sites, activities, and program areas, and while they are being escorted throughout the facility and off grounds, as necessary.

Inspects physical plant and evaluates for security defects.

* Reviews reports by other security personnel and initiates action as necessary to correct discrepancies found.

* Executes directives and assignments issued by Shift Supervisor, Major, Deputy Superintendent, or Superintendent.

* Plans, organizes, directs, reviews, develops, and implements orders, directives, policies, and procedures concerning security operations including, but not limited to facility general orders, post orders and Internal Management Policies and Procedures.

* Follow established security procedures in controlling visitors, staff, juvenile offender, and vehicular traffic to prevent the admittance or exit of unauthorized persons and/or the introduction of contraband. Respond to facility/unit emergency and crisis situations utilizing the appropriate contingency plans.

* This position directly supervises sergeants (JCOII) who, in turn, supervise line staff. Expected to plan, coordinate, and evaluate the scheduling needs of Juvenile Corrections Officers facility wide to ensure there is always adequate staff coverage by maintaining the Master Roster and ensuring adequate shift coverage.

* Plans, directs, and evaluates the security program of the facility, both on campus and off. Develops and implements systems for controlling contraband.

* Advise the Shift Supervisor on the needs of the facility that fall under their management.

* Participates in investigations at the request of Enforcement, Apprehensions, and Investigations (EAI) or the directions of the Superintendent.
