This is a variable non-supervisory position responsible for assisting with manual work in the maintenance of City property, resources, and facilities. The City is primarily looking for someone who is interested in working part-time hours year-round, but the position also has the capability to work full-time hours for up to 6 months (or 1,000 hours). Work is usually performed under direct supervision, but routine activities are often carried out independently.

Interaction is direct with customers, the general public, other department personnel or other agencies. Steel Toe Boots, Jeans, Work shirts, and all Personal Protective Equipment is provided by the City.

Position Responsibilities:

This position will work alongside Traffic Technicians to assist with the following duties:

Traffic Signs. Install and maintain traffic and street name signs, interpret work orders and determine the proper size, color, type and location of signs and post. Design and fabricate special signs using various types of machines. Install and operate traffic counters, temporary signage, and work zone signage. Replace or repair signs on an emergency basis.

Pavement Marking. Perform painting and repainting of center lines, lane lines, parking lines, and crosswalks which includes applying both cold plastic or thermoplastic pavement markings.

Traffic Signals. Assist with preventive and emergency maintenance on traffic signal equipment throughout the City. Remove and replace equipment when necessary. Test all electronic components for proper operation. Assist with traffic signal timing adjustments when approved, establish and maintain safe work zones, and make proper use of a variety of electronic testing equipment. Assist with any new installations and major repair work required on the traffic signal systems.

Conduct inspections of traffic signals maintained by the City and submit a detailed report of required maintenance.

Street Lights. Perform preventive and emergency maintenance on street light equipment throughout the City. Remove and replace equipment when necessary. Assist with any new installations and major repair work required on the street lighting. Conduct field inspections of street light installations.

Equipment Maintenance. Performs routine maintenance and repairs on vehicles, paint guns, specialized light weight equipment and other equipment used in the performance of work.

Emergency Operations. Performs emergency operations as needed (e.g., emergency traffic sign and signal repairs, natural disasters, snow removal).

Other Duties. Performs other related duties as requested or assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Entry Level (begins at $16.00 per hour, DOQ):
  • High school diploma or the equivalent.
  • Previous experience in construction, maintenance, and/or the operation of trucks and light equipment preferred.
  • Valid Driver's License with an acceptable driving record;
    Commercial Drivers License (CDL) preferred.
Senior Level (begins at $19.00 per hour, DOQ):
  • High School diploma or the equivalent.
  • A minimum of five (5) years experience in construction, maintenance, and/or the operation of trucks and light equipment.
  • Valid Driver's License with an acceptable driving record;
    Commercial Drivers License (CDL) preferred.
Any combination of education and experience that provides the knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the responsibilities listed above will also be considered.

Work Schedule

This is a non-benefits eligible variable position. The preferred schedule for this position would be part-time hours year-round, but could also be full-time hours for up to 6 months (or 1,000 hours). Regular working hours are 7:00am - 3:30pm Monday through Friday. Occasional night and weekend hours could also be requested for special event support.
