Clinical Laboratory Assistant

This position serves as phlebotomist, clinical lab orders specialist, and processing specialist, full time or part time, ordering, collecting and processing specimens for testing in the clinical laboratory to assist the medical staff in assessing, diagnosing and treating disease or impairment of health of patients utilizing the services of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation Health Services.

Essential functions include:

  • Reading notes provided by medical staff to interpret outside lab orders received on referral requests.
  • Interpreting the notes into orderable lab tests.
  • Assigning the appropriate ICD-10 billing code to the test per the providers signs/symptoms provided.
  • Ordering the appropriate testing in the Electronic health record.
  • Placing special orders in the referral lab system for esoteric testing.
  • Placing/modifying scheduling in moonwalk scheduling program.
  • Printing next day schedule and reviewing each patient’s orders for additions, subtractions and modifications to prepare for next day collection.
  • Printing eight day out schedule and reviewing each patient on schedule. Printing orders, preparing purpose of visit documentation, and notifying provider if orders are needed.
  • Reviewing notifications for outside orders and reviewing all documentation to complete the requested order.
  • Tagging schedulers and additional departments as required to expedite all testing.
  • Reviewing notifications for add on tests required by the providers.
  • Placing all COVID orders for Dental schedule.
  • Assisting nursing and provider staff with order questions and calls for clarification of orders as required.
  • Being certified collector for DOT and non-DOT urine drug screening collection for employee workers comp. program.
  • Serving as the phlebotomist in adult, pediatric, and geriatric collection of specimens for the clinical laboratory.
  • Assisting nursing staff with port blood collections.
  • Identifying and preparing patients for specimen collection as appropriate for the testing ordered by the provider.
  • Collecting specimens in accordance with laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Administering oral glucose challenge, and saliva testing for esoteric testing.
  • Complying with laboratory procedures for date, time and identification of specimens collected.
  • Accessioning and labeling specimens for testing in an accurate and efficient manner.
  • Accessioning, labeling and packaging specimens for referral to outside testing facilities.
  • Providing the billing department with manifested testing orders for patient bills.
  • Completing incomplete lists and checks to clear the department daily.
  • Notifying supervisor of unresolved requisition errors or specimen integrity problems.
  • Completing quality assurance reports for any errors or specimen integrity problems.
  • Performing daily test counts to provide statistics to administration.
  • Actively participating in the laboratory's quality control/quality assurance activities.
  • Participating as an active member of the laboratory staff to improve the overall operation and efficiency of the laboratory; promoting teamwork and excellence among co-workers.

Additional duties may include:

  • Performing other duties and projects as required by management.

Minimum qualifications for consideration include:

  • High school diploma or equivalency.
  • Proficiency in word processing, typing, and general electronic communication.
  • Proficiency in chart note interpretation and interpretation of laboratory orders and coding.
  • Proficiency in medical terminology and communicating using medical terms.
  • Proficient in Microsoft outlook and Microsoft word.
  • Two years phlebotomy experience in a clinical setting.
  • Excellent communication skills and a positive attitude toward patients, providers and co-workers.

Physical requirements include:

  • The ability to remain standing for prolonged periods of time.
  • The ability to bend, stretch, and lift 40 pounds.
  • The ability to work in a high stress environment and remain calm.
  • Meeting all health care immunization requirements.
  • Ability to wear personal protective equipment and use protective barriers for isolation for extended periods of time.

Environmental conditions include:

  • General clinical environment with frequent exposure to chemicals, blood borne pathogens and patient body fluids.
