Position Summary / Objective

The Advanced Electronics & Opto-Electronic Engineer supports the concept, advanced development, and pre-production validation of automotive lighting electronics, with a strong focus on opto-electronic system integration and robust electrical design. This role spans early concept development through validation and production readiness, blending electrical engineering expertise with optical and mechanical system awareness.

The ideal candidate will bring deep experience in schematic design, power electronics, EMC/EMI mitigation, simulation, and validation, while collaborating closely with mechanical, optical, software, and manufacturing teams. This role also supports OEM customer interactions, quoting activities, and rapid prototype hardware development.

Primary

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Design and develop advanced automotive lighting electronics and control systems.
  • Develop electrical architectures and schematics for LED drivers, lighting control, and opto-electronic systems.
  • Direct and support internal or external PCB layout resources by defining layout constraints and reviewing layouts to produce complete design packages (schematics, BOMs, Gerber and drill files).
  • Integrate electronics with optical and mechanical lighting components to optimize system-level performance, packaging, and durability.
  • Collaborate with Mechanical Engineering on thermal simulations and system-level thermal strategies.
  • Support prototyping activities including board bring-up, debugging, and functional evaluation.
  • Evaluate new technologies related to automotive lighting, electronics, and system integration.
  • Work with Purchasing to source components and evaluate PCB fabrication and assembly suppliers.
  • Interface directly with OEM engineering teams to present technical solutions and understand requirements.
  • Support internal sales and quoting teams with technical content and costed BOMs.
  • Ensure designs meet manufacturability, reliability, and Muth Company quality standards.
  • Participate in customer visits, technical reviews, and industry events as required.
Required Skills & Knowledge
  • Strong background in automotive lighting electronics, LED control, and embedded electrical systems.
  • Proficiency in schematic capture and in directing PCB layout activities using Altium Designer or equivalent ECAD tools.
  • Proficiency with electrical simulation tools (e.g., LTSpice, PSpice) for design validation and optimization.
  • Working knowledge of thermal design principles, including minimizing waste heat and ensuring electrical functionality at elevated temperatures.
  • Ability to collaborate with Mechanical Engineering on thermal simulations and electro‑mechanical integration.
  • Hands‑on experience with EMC/EMI design practices and support of validation testing.
  • Demonstrated ability to design electronics compliant with OEM and regulatory standards (EMC, electrical, environmental) and to support formal validation and verification processes.
  • Familiarity with opto-electronic systems such as LED optics, light guides, and HUD‑related technologies.
  • Knowledge of automotive communication protocols (LIN, CAN, Automotive Ethernet).
  • Experience with DFM/DFX and cost‑optimized design for production.
  • Familiarity with Solid Works or similar MCAD tools is preferred to support mechanical‑electrical integration.
  • Comfortable working cross‑functionally and interfacing directly with OEM customers.
Education & Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics, or a related field (required).
  • 5+ years of experience in automotive or lighting electronics development.
  • Experience with vehicle‑level design validation, EMC testing, and system integration.
  • Exposure to optical or opto-electronic product development is a strong plus.
