Major Responsibilities
- Nurse/Patient Relationship and Human Relations with Team Members
- Role model professional behaviors, adaptive and collaborative communication style through partnership with other professionals within and outside the department
- Assign registered nurses and ancillary personnel to patient care activities; provide appropriate delegation of patient care tasks
- Provide peer accountability through peer coaching for problem solving and measures that promote quality, safety and service
- Provide service recovery for patient/family concerns and complaints; manage patient delays and utilize chain of command when necessary
- Promote recognition of staff accomplishments and manage upward reporting to unit management
- Demonstrate a positive attitude and professional behaviors as a representative of the surgical team, promoting team synergy and staff confidence
- Report unit issues and concerns in a timely manner to Surgical Services Management, including team behaviors, associate performance, process and safety issues
- Model leadership behaviors and promote Advocate Behaviors of Excellence
- Provide leadership as an effective change agent, maintaining professional accountability and holding others accountable to meeting unit practice, quality, safety, and service standards
- Collaborate and establish partnerships with physicians and other department leaders to ensure quality patient care and seamless transitions of care
- Perform additional leadership duties as assigned
- Assist in assessment of staff performance through peer review
- Address unit/staff issues and concerns, promoting problem solving
- Assist in conflict resolution by communicating concerns to management
- Anticipate day‑to‑day staffing needs by reviewing surgical case census, patient acuity, and availability of hospital beds, collaborating with management daily and as needed
- Update staffing changes in Advocate works, print weekly staffing sheets, and review staffing needs with management
- Coordinate support services to promote an environment of care, utilizing daily unit checklists to open and close the department
- Coordinate with Supply Chain and Logistics to ensure resource management of supplies and equipment
- Direct patient throughput and workflows to promote a safe unit environment and patient satisfaction
- Assist unit management with unit productivity and staffing to meet budgetary targets while ensuring safe patient care
- Collaborate on staffing with other Perianesthesia Departments
- Coordinate unit staffing to promote staff involvement in committees, task forces, and educational opportunities
- In collaboration with Bed Coordination, assist in the coordination of patients to the Surgical Hold Unit and serve as a resource to the Surgical Hold staff
- Ensure reporting of safety events or near‑miss events through completion of Remote Data Entry (RDE) safety reporting online form
- Provide clinical care as outlined in the Registered Nurse Job Description
- Participate in departmental activities that improve patient care and unit operations
- Earn a minimum of 10 contact hours per year
- Demonstrate clinical leadership through involvement in unit or organization committees/task forces that improve patient care, quality, safety, or service
- Be accountable for own professional development by attending or completing learning activities that promote leadership and patient care
Registered Nurse (RN)
Education and Experience Required- Graduate from an accredited school of nursing
- ADN acceptable with agreement to enroll in a BSN completion program within two years, completed within five years
- Two years of RN experience
- One year of Charge Nurse experience
- Good communication skills
- Good computer skills
- Good time‑management and organizational skills
- Familiarity with patient care equipment
- Current RN license in the state of practice
- Current CPR certification
- Certifications/education required for the nursing specialty (see Certification Addendum)
