Position: Casual Deputy - Sheriff's Office - Sheboygan County

The Sheboygan County Sheriff’s Office is seeking experienced, professional law enforcement and public safety personnel to serve as a Casual Deputy / Background Investigator. This critical role combines courtroom security operations with confidential investigative responsibilities to help ensure the safety, integrity, and efficient operation of the judicial system.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct background investigations and security-related inquiries
  • Review, analyze, document, and verify investigative information
  • Prepare investigative reports and recommendations
  • Maintain courtroom and courthouse security during hearings and proceedings
  • Conduct courthouse entrance screening using security equipment
  • Escort and transport inmates and detainees
  • Monitor courtroom security systems and panic alarms
  • Respond to disturbances and security concerns
  • Assist judges, attorneys, jurors, witnesses, and the public
  • Conduct security checks of courtrooms and holding areas
  • Assist with jury management and civil process operations as assigned
  • Perform related duties as assigned
Qualifications
  • Wisconsin Law Enforcement Certification required
  • Associate degree in Criminal Justice or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Minimum of ten (10) years of law enforcement, corrections, courthouse security, military, investigative, or related public safety experience required
  • Prior investigative or courtroom security experience preferred
  • Knowledge of investigative procedures, courtroom security practices, and public safety operations
  • Strong communication, professionalism, and decision-making skills
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and work effectively under stressful conditions
  • Ability to work independently and interact professionally with judges, attorneys, inmates, court staff, and the public
  • Must obtain and maintain required Sheriff’s Office certifications and successfully complete all required background checks, screenings, and evaluations

Work is primarily performed within courthouse and courtroom settings and includes frequent interaction with judges, attorneys, inmates, justice partners, and the public. Duties involve standing, walking, monitoring, interviewing, inmate transport, and operation of security and communication equipment. Exposure to stressful or confrontational situations may occur. Standard schedule is Monday through Friday, with overtime or schedule adjustments as operationally necessary.
