As a Correctional Officer, you’ll be part of a trained, collaborative team committed to safety, professionalism, and public service. You’ll receive structured training and ongoing support as you carry out the following responsibilities:

  • Work closely with fellow officers and supervisors to maintain a safe, secure, and orderly correctional environment
  • Conduct regular rounds and observations, using your training to identify safety concerns and prevent incidents
  • Monitor inmate behavior and communicate concerns or rule violations through established reporting channels
  • Assist with the intake and booking of new inmates, including housing assignments and escorts, with guidance from experienced staff
  • Issue uniforms, bedding, hygiene supplies, and assist with meal service as part of coordinated daily operations
  • Supervise inmate work assignments that support cleanliness and facility operations while reinforcing expectations and accountability
  • Perform searches in accordance with training, policy, and gender‑specific requirements
  • Inspect housing units and common areas for contraband and safety issues, working as a team to address concerns
  • Maintain discipline through fair, consistent enforcement of rules and procedures, supported by clear policies and supervision
  • Escort and transport inmates to court, medical appointments, and approved activities while ensuring security and compliance
  • Support correctional programs, including rehabilitation and work‑release (Huber) initiatives, as part of a team‑focused approach to inmate management
  • Respond to emergencies using trained response techniques and only the level of force necessary to restore order
  • Accurately document inmate movement, status, and time served using established systems and procedures
  • Complete reports, logs, and records to support team communication and facility accountability
  • Provide courtroom testimony related to observed incidents or inmate activity when required
  • Communicate effectively across shifts to ensure continuity of operations and shared awareness
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Sheriff or designee
Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Comprehensive training provided, including classroom instruction and on‑the‑job training to prepare you for success as a Correctional Officer
  • Self‑motivated and capable of completing assignments effectively, efficiently, and thoroughly with minimal supervision
  • Clear and professional verbal and written communication skills
  • Capacity to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team
  • Willingness to accept supervision, direction, and constructive feedback
  • Resilience and sound judgment when functioning in stressful or high‑pressure situations
  • Professional discretion to maintain confidentiality and positive working relationships with coworkers and other staff
  • Reliability in maintaining regular and predictable attendance in accordance with scheduling requirements
Work Environment & Physical Demands
  • Work is performed in a secure correctional facility environment that requires constant awareness of surroundings and adherence to safety procedures
  • Position involves direct contact with inmates and interaction with coworkers, supervisors, and the public
  • Work schedules may include rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, overtime, and emergency call‑ins
  • Physical demands include standing and walking for extended periods, climbing stairs, bending, kneeling, reaching, and lifting or moving objects and individuals as required
  • Position requires the ability to operate security equipment, communication devices, and computer systems
  • Must possess sufficient vision, hearing, and verbal communication abilities to monitor activity, respond to incidents, and communicate clearly
  • Required to wear department‑issued uniforms and personal protective equipment as assigned
  • Must be able to meet the physical, medical, and psychological standards required for employment as a Correctional Officer
