The Assistant to the Head Cook will work under the direct supervision of the Head Cook to provide support for the timely and accurate production of meals for the Meals on Wheels program. You will also work with the Head of Catering and the Café Supervisor to ensure the Meals on Wheels, catering, and café divisions are properly prepped and stocked.
This position requires strict adherence to safety, hygiene, and facility food preparation guidelines.
This position requires 35 hours of work per week. Gratuity is awarded for assistance on catered events and café service. The typical business hours are Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm, but scheduling may require outside these hours. A biweekly schedule will be developed. Additional support during peak café hours (busing tables, running errands, dishwashing) may be required. There may be occasions where the volunteer coordinator asks for support with meal delivery.
DutiesPrep Cooking Responsibilities
- Prepare and serve all menu items according to kitchen policies and procedures.
- Basic chopping and peeling of fruits and vegetables to support recipes.
- Early morning baking (breads, biscuits, desserts) as needed.
- Preparation of salads, fruits and vegetables.
- Preparing soups, stocks and sauces.
Meal Packaging and Volunteer Interaction
- Packaging and proper labeling of meals.
- Support, encourage and supervise Meals on Wheels volunteers during pick-up.
- Delivery of meals, as needed.
Food Handling and Safety
- Ensure quality and safety of food preparation by performing standard sanitary measures and proper cleaning and storage of food items.
- Adhere to regulations including blood borne pathogens, infection control, hazardous materials handling, and fire safety.
- Log temperatures and cleaning duties as per kitchen SOPs.
- Report any infraction of food service policies and procedures.
Kitchen Organization and Cleanliness
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of the kitchen.
- Provide a clean and organized workspace; assist with dishwashing, setup and clearing of catering events.
- Support café needs as required.
Responsibilities for Kitchen Operations
- Be kitchen lead in the absence of Head Cook due to illness or other reasons.
- Contact Head Cook or Division Manager for approvals as needed.
- Notify Head Cook when supplies are low and ensure inventory is maintained.
- Participate in problem solving and decision making; support team decisions.
- Collaborate with the Head Chef to meet kitchen needs; address issues promptly.
- Ensure timely kitchen activities and assist in menu design.
Other Duties/Responsibilities

Required Skills and Certifications
- 3-5 years of kitchen experience
- 3 years culinary experience
- Supervisory experience is an asset
- Food safety training and certification
- First aid/CPR training and certification
- Clear criminal background and vulnerable sector check
- Ability to lift up to 50 lb
- Knowledge of food serving methods, sanitation principles, and safe food handling
- Free of diseases that may be transmitted in job duties
- Flexible with strong interpersonal skills for diverse, busy environments
- Strong teamwork, attention to detail, time management, multitasking, and prioritization
