SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHER (K-6) - VACANCY NOTICE & JOB DESCRIPTION

May be assigned to L.E. Willson Elementary School (P-2nd) or W.A. Thread gill Primary School (3rd-6th)

CATEGORY: Certified

CONTRACT PERIOD: 9.5 month/187 days for the  School Year

QUALIFICATIONS: Special education teacher to work with students with diverse abilities; primarily within inclusive general education classrooms. Applicant must be certified in Special Education K-6. Also prefer experience with Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), or other types of behavioral support.

Salary will be paid based on the approved state minimum salary schedule - classroom teachers as approved by the Board

POSITION TITLE: Special Education Teacher

REPORTS TO: Principal

JOB GOAL: To implement an educational program for special needs students using the designated course of study, appropriate materials and resources, and IEP’s.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree, or higher from an accredited college or university.
  • Valid Alabama State Professional Educators Certificate in special education.
  • Able to meet suitability criteria for employment and/or certification/licensure under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No.
  • Proficiency in oral and written communication skills.
  • Effective interpersonal skills, with an emphasis on communication and collaboration with a wide variety of people and groups.
  • Ability to develop and implement curriculum and programming specific to the needs of assigned students.
  • Ability to use technology to communicate, to plan and provide instruction, to facilitate student learning, to manage data, and to produce/submit required reports, correspondence, and/or financial information.
  • Physical strength, mobility, dexterity, stamina, and acuity to perform job responsibilities.
  • Ability to stand, walk, stoop, and assist with student toileting and specific hygiene needs.
  • Ability to transfer students, feed students, and provide physical intervention when required.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, with assistance.
  • Ability to be punctual and in regular attendance.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may require.
  • PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES AND

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Demonstrates support for the school system and its vision, goals, and priorities.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of child development and of characteristics of disabilities.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the prescribed curriculum.
  • Participates in the development of students’ individual education plans (IEPs) as a member of the IEP team.
  • Implements students’ IEPs.
  • Schedules IEP meetings.
  • Employs a variety of instructional strategies and techniques consistent with the individual needs and capabilities of students.
  • Monitors student participation in regular education programs as appropriate, collaborating with regular education teachers and other school system personnel and providing assistance and/or specialized materials or lesson modifications as needed.
  • Utilizes technology to plan and provide instruction and facilitate student learning.
  • Models appropriate and innovative use of technology for students.
  • Facilitates and monitors the integration of instructional technology and assistive technology equipment in the classroom.
  • Creates or selects long-range instructional plans based on a review of system and state curriculum priorities, student IPs, and instructional priorities.
  • Defines goals and objectives for long-range instructional, departmental, grade level and daily lesson plans.
  • Identifies, specific intended learning outcomes that are challenging, meaningful and measurable.
  • Selects, develops, modifies and/or adapts materials and resources which support learning objectives and address students’ needs.
  • Maintains a clean, attractive and organized learning environment.
  • Engages in appropriate behavior management techniques.
  • Organizes procedures, practices, materials, and routines for the effective use of instructional time and for the completion of administration activities.
