This is an exciting opportunity for a Heavy Vehicle Apprentice to be supported through their programme while working within Cormac. You will work towards achieving the Level 3 Heavy Vehicle Service and Maintenance Technician Standard whilst working for Cormac, gaining a Level 3 qualification and experience in our Fleet business.

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands‑on experience.

What you’ll do at work

You will be enrolled on the Level 3 Heavy Vehicle Service and Maintenance Technician Apprenticeship Standard with one of our preferred training providers. You will be expected to attend the college on a day-release basis to complete your apprenticeship.

As an Apprentice Workshop Technician, you will support and be supported by qualified Workshop Technician(s)/Mentor(s) in the inspection, maintenance, and repair of fleet and mechanical equipment working under supervision to learn industry standards, safety procedures, diagnostic techniques, and repair methods.

  • Learn to carry out a wide range of servicing, maintenance, and repair tasks on fleet and mechanical equipment, including routine inspections, part replacement, and basic testing.
  • Develop diagnostic skills using both hands‑on experience and specialist equipment to identify and resolve mechanical and electrical faults.
  • Learn how to ensure all vehicles and equipment are safe, roadworthy, and fit for use before returning to service.
  • Accurately complete job records, inspection sheets, and digital systems in line with company and legal requirements.
  • Communicate effectively with team members and customers, providing updates on work in progress.
  • Participate in ongoing training to build your technical knowledge and skills.

Heavy vehicle service and maintenance technician (level
3)

  • Carry out the basic tasks with tools and equipment common to all procedures involving basic mechanical and electrical procedures related to HV
  • The ability to keep updated with emerging new technologies within the HV industry.
  • Contribute to the maintenance of a safe and efficient workshop and adhere to the company and legislative processes.
  • Access specific and related HV technical information appropriately.
  • The ability to service, inspect and maintain HVs and trailers to meet company, Driver and vehicle standards agency (DVSA) and manufacturers’ standards.
  • Use a range of diagnostic and electrical measuring equipment to identify faults and underlying causes on HV’s.
  • Successfully inspect and prepare vehicles and trailers to meet DVSA standards prescribed in the tester’s manual.
  • Carry out final quality checks before handover to the customer without supervision.
  • Apply advanced diagnostic principles and logical/problem solving techniques and regimes.
  • Maintain records to company and operators’ licence obligations and regulation.
  • To be able to communicate effectively in both oral and written mediums both internally and with customers on a range of topics that will support, HV inspection and diagnosing techniques.

You will attend Cornwall College in Camborne 1 day a week for your training and work 4 days a week with Cormac.

Requirements

GCSE in:

  • English (grade C or 4 and above)
  • Maths (grade A-C or 4-9)
