Mold Repair Technician
The Mold Repair Technician tests, inspects, troubleshoots, and repairs tooling and molds used in a high-volume plastics injection molding facility. This role focuses on restoring and maintaining tooling performance, performing engineering changes, and supporting production operations while mentoring apprentices in all aspects of mold making.
Responsibilities
- Test, inspect, and troubleshoot tooling to identify faulty or damaged components and determine appropriate repair methods.
- Repair tooling installed within production machines on the plant floor to minimize downtime and maintain product quality.
- Perform detailed repairs, corrections, and engineering changes to molds as requested by production and tooling leadership.
- Analyze and interpret drawings, sketches, blueprints, and design data to determine tool specifications, tolerances, and required adjustments.
- Use mechanical tools and equipment to disassemble, repair, adjust, and reassemble molds and related tooling components.
- Perform preventive maintenance on molds and tooling to reduce unplanned failures and extend tool life.
- Collaborate with production, maintenance, and engineering teams to resolve tooling issues and implement improvements.
- Teach and guide apprentices through all facets of mold making, including setup, repair techniques, tooling standards, and safe work practices.
- Document repairs, modifications, and maintenance activities to ensure accurate tooling history and traceability.
- Follow established safety procedures and use required personal protective equipment at all times while working in and around machinery.
Essential Skills
- Strong mechanical aptitude and ability to work with complex tooling and machinery.
- Hands-on experience with troubleshooting and repairing molds and tooling in a manufacturing environment.
- Proficiency in reading and interpreting blueprints, drawings, sketches, and design data to determine tool specifications and tolerances.
- Experience performing maintenance and repair tasks, including preventive maintenance on molds and related equipment.
- Mechanical operating skills for working with machines and tooling in a production plant.
- 4 to 10 years of related experience and/or training in mold making, tooling repair, or a closely related field.
- Journeyman or Master craftsman certification, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Ability to analyze mechanical issues, identify root causes, and implement effective corrective actions.
- Attention to detail and precision when working with tight tolerances and complex tooling.
- Capability to work independently and prioritize tasks in a fast-paced production environment.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience working with plastics injection molding tools and equipment.
- Experience in mechanical maintenance or machine operation within a manufacturing setting.
- Familiarity with preventive maintenance programs and documentation practices.
- Ability to mentor and train apprentices or less experienced team members in mold making and tooling repair.
- Strong communication skills to collaborate effectively with production, maintenance, and engineering personnel.
- Comfort working in a non-climate-controlled industrial environment.
- Combination of formal training, certifications, and on-the-job experience in tooling, mold repair, or related trades.
