Job Summary
The material handler is responsible for handling and monitoring quality finished products and packaging materials. Responsibilities also include proper handling of scrap that results from converting and other associated processes. The material handler manually packs product from forming machines, lifts and pulls product from the machine, visually inspects the product, places it in a bag, secures a tie to the bag, and places the bagged product in a box.
The material handler also sorts and lifts boxes of product, pushes boxes through the taper, carries boxes of product, and stacks boxes onto pallets. The material handler uses a manual pallet jack to move and position empty or full pallets of product. The material handler uses an RF scanner, creates and attaches load tags, and may hand wrap loads or stretch wrap.
Material handlers may use a lift assist device to stack boxes onto pallets and operate a forklift.
- Handle and move (e.g., pack, feed, palletize) process‑specific material/product consistent with the assigned position, machine speed, and customer and quality specifications.
- Ensure that all materials associated with the converting process and consistent with the assigned position are available in the correct quantities and in the correct location for the order being run (e.g., RSCs, dividers, bags, film, blanks, etc.).
- Perform process‑specific quality inspections, complete quality‑control documentation, and communicate any quality issues to the operator and supervisor.
- Record data on specified forms and complete required documentation.
- Use an RF scanner for process‑specific requirements to scan transactions to the Warehouse Management System and generate load tags.
- Prepare, unwrap, and wrap loads using hand‑wrappers, stretch wrappers, or banding equipment following the wrapping/banding requirements for the process‑specific product/material and for the assigned position.
- Use a sit‑down forklift, process‑specific clamp truck, and manual or electric pallet jack to stage pallets/product/materials in a designated area.
- Dispose of process‑specific waste material following all safety requirements and waste‑disposal procedures for the assigned position.
- Assist the machine operator and perform equipment and process‑specific tasks.
- Remove jams at the machine position and restart the machine as required by the position.
- Communicate any machine or product issues to the operator or supervisor.
- Perform general housekeeping in the work area and assist others as required during machine downtime.
- Comply with all company policies and procedures, including GMP, PPE, HACCP, LOTO, and JSA regulations.
- Responsible for ensuring, where applicable, the product safety, quality, regulatory compliance, and legality of all products produced and sold.
Skills and Qualifications
- High school diploma or prior work‑related skill, knowledge, or experience is usually needed.
- Equivalent experience or experience multi‑tasking in a fast‑paced work environment.
- Ability to use an RF scanner for WMS transactions as required for the position.
- Ability to operate a forklift, clamp truck (process‑specific), manual pallet jack, and/or an electric pallet jack as required for the position.
- Ability to use material‑handling devices such as a hoist and a pneumatic lift‑assist device as required for the position.
- Must be able to read, understand, and comprehend documents such as safety rules, internal quality procedures, and machine operating procedures.
- Excellent communication skills; must have the ability to communicate production issues to supervisors and others in the work area.
- Basic mathematics (counting).
