Job Summary

The Lead Medic is primarily responsible for ensuring successful EMS operations during assigned shift as well as any other duties as assigned. Lead Medics work in conjunction with the EMS Medical Director, fellow EMS employees, employees of CCH and other healthcare facilities, and public service agencies to provide exceptional patient and family care in the pre‑hospital and interfacility transfer settings. Lead Medics direct, and lead all assigned employees on their shift in various activities including, but not limited to, patient care, documentation, training, quality improvement/assurance, public education/relation events, special event standbys, car seat inspections, and facility and ambulance maintenance.

Additionally, Lead Medics are responsible for staff scheduling, coordination of vehicle maintenance, the medical supplies inventory, and medication/controlled substance inventory and chain of custody on their shift. Lead Medics also actively participate in the planning, budgeting, and execution of the mission, vision, values, and goals of the EMS department and CCH. Reports to the assigned Shift Supervisor and Manager.

Essential Functions
  • Performs all primary job functions contained in the paramedic job description. (Should be outlined specifically.)
  • Responds to emergencies, coordinates, and directs the activities of personnel while prioritizing provider and patient safety.
  • Leads EMT’s, AEMT’s, IEMT’s, paramedics, students, volunteers, and other riders assigned to their shift or floating to their shift. Helps lead and conduct orientation, training, and evaluation of employees, student riders, and volunteers in coordination with EMS Manager.
  • Complies with the CCH Corporate Compliance Program, applicable federal/state/local laws, and policies and procedures of CCH and the EMS department.
  • Maintains respectful, professional, and courteous relationships with EMS Director, EMS Manager, EMS Shift Supervisors, EMS Medical Director, employees of the EMS department, and employees of CCH.
  • Develops and maintains respectful, professional, and courteous relationships with community leaders and members, other healthcare facilities and their employees, and employees of the law enforcement, fire service, and mine rescue communities.
  • Completes all mandatory training required by CCH.
  • Maintains clinical competencies and knowledge of professional standards related to protocols, clinical practice, skill proficiency, staffing, and continuing education. Maintains valid state issued driver’s license.
  • Maintains valid state issued driver’s license. Maintains driving record standards required by the insurance provider of CCH. Operates vehicles in a safe and prudent manner in accordance with applicable federal, state, and local laws as well as CCH and EMS policy.
  • Maintains operational readiness, professional appearance, and safety of staff, ambulances, equipment, and facilities.
  • Fills various roles within the ICs system on emergency scenes.
  • When requested during surges in patient volumes, assist with medical treatment of patients in other departments of CCH under the direction of the MD and RN within their scope of practice as defined by the State of Wyoming.
  • Participates in shift coverage, departmental rounding, on committees, and in training and education to ensure successful operation of the EMS department and CCH.
