The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) is seeking a full-time Heavy Mechanic Supervisor II, located in Sheridan, Wyoming. Enjoy all historic Western Sheridan has to offer! The Heavy Mechanic Supervisor II performs various maintenance and repair tasks with automotive equipment and heavy‑duty vehicles, including diesel and gasoline engine overhauls and tune‑ups, brakes, steering, transmission, or hydraulic repair. The Supervisor will lead a team of mechanics and work closely with other WYDOT programs to provide excellent customer service.

- Directs shop crew operations in maintenance and repair of equipment and vehicles, including fabrication of new equipment.
- Supervises the total operation of the mechanics' shop.
- Assists with the evaluation of equipment in the shop area for the equipment budget.
- Gives guidance and counsel to employees to meet goals.
- Researches changes in technology and educates subordinates about new applications and procedures.
- Facilitates dialog with other programs to ensure efficiency.
- Knowledge of basic computer skills; email system, Word, Excel.
- High level of mechanical ability.
- Aptitude to troubleshoot various mechanical issues with a given piece of equipment; ability to gas and arc weld and cut; ability to use hand and power tools.
- Knowledge of methods and techniques of automotive maintenance and repair to include diesel-powered engines.
- Understand electronic principles and how to use diagnostic tools.
- The ability to read and interpret technical manuals (schematics) and any other information dealing with expertise areas.
- The ability to assess a given situation and decide the best course of action for resolving the issue.
- The ability to diagnose mechanical issues and determine the proper cost‑effective course of action for repairs.
- Possess leadership, management training, and interpersonal communication skills to effectively communicate with customers and shop workers.
- Work with other departments and agencies with equipment specifications and needs, and be flexible in meeting our shop and customer requests.
- Set an example, direct actions, focus, and guide co‑workers/employees to the task at hand.
- Communicate to the District Equipment Supervisor the shop’s accomplishments, equipment needs, and failures in a timely and consistent manner.
Education & Experience Substitution: 4‑6 years of progressive work experience (typically in Heavy Mechanics) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Heavy Mechanic Supervisor I.
Education: Bachelor's Degree (typically in Management).
Experience: 0‑3 years of progressive work experience (typically in Heavy Mechanics) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Heavy Mechanic Supervisor I.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Ability to obtain a CDL.
Physical Working Conditions- This position must work under various inclement weather conditions, including heat, cold, snow, and wet conditions.
- Ability to work around high‑speed traffic and heavy construction equipment.
- Physical ability to bend, stoop, and lift up to 50 pounds safely and dexterity with hands are all required to be able to perform effectively in this position physically.
- Ability to stand for prolonged periods of time.
- Individuals in this classification must be available for emergency work calls at any time, including nights, weekends, and holidays. Individuals must report to the Department Shop within 30 minutes of receiving the call.…
