Job Summary

Under the general supervision of the department manager, supervises activities and assists department staff with the operations of Welch Cancer Center, Palliative Care, Rheumatology and Outpatient Infusion service lines. Promotes effective utilization of services, streamlines workflows to best serve patients, monitors resources to ensure the most efficient practices and assumes leadership with the multidisciplinary team to achieve optimal service line performance.

Writes and educates staff on standard of work. Plans and organizes activities and department operations to ensure patient needs are met in accordance with physician instruction and hospital policy. Act as a physician liaison. Supports and empowers staff to embrace SMH mission and goals. Provides direct patient care as needed. Consults other departments, as appropriate, to collaborate in patient care and provide for an interdisciplinary approach.

Job Functions Supervisor duties and responsibilities include
  • Along with the department manager, provides feedback for orientation and annual performance appraisals and clinical competency assessment, ensuring regular feedback, coaching, and communications with employees.
  • Ensures a high level of performance standards and achievement to meet organizational needs and business goals.
  • Provides development opportunities for staff to broaden and enhance skills and abilities.
  • Administers organization policies and procedures.
  • Ensures compliance with safety policies and good housekeeping.
  • Coordinates initial training of new employees and ongoing training as required.
  • Promotes an environment that fosters teamwork and commitment to satisfy customer requirements.
  • Develops ongoing competency assessment and opportunities to engage employees with ongoing education opportunities.
  • Actively participates in and owns process improvement projects for the unit, utilizing Management Daily Improvement techniques, LEAN techniques and ownership in the process with the manager, participates in aspects of the employment cycle.
General Duties
  • Responsible for the staff scheduling, staff development and ongoing education across specialty services.
  • Formulates a teaching plan based upon the identified learning needs of staff and evaluates the effectiveness of their learning.
  • Maintains a good working relationship both within the department and with other departments.
  • Provides general direction to department staff for daily operations, staffing, clinical activities, huddles, safety, and quality matters.
  • Assists in the development of performance improvement/LEAN activities. Educates staff on the PI process. Participates in PI data collection, indicator development, and evaluation criteria, etc. Maintains appropriate quality control programs.
  • Participates in the development, implementation, review, and revision of departmental policies and procedures.
  • Ensures all rules and regulations are observed by employees, to include overall corporate compliance and compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Participates in safety reporting, root cause analysis of safety events and logging into RL Solutions.
  • Implements and monitors adherence to evidence-based clinical nursing practice consistent with nursing research, organizational, and national practice standards.
  • Identifies gaps and collaborates with manager to initiate strategies to improve patient care, patient satisfaction, and employee satisfaction.
