Job Summary

  • Clearance Requirements:
    National Background Check with Inquiries, Fingerprints, and Drug Screen.
  • Type of Employment:
    Full-Time, 40 hours per week.
  • Estimated Period of Performance: TBD – contract will be up to 5 years.
  • Total Compensation pay: $44.50 per hour.

    Up to 80 hours per year, occurring on day one.

    Up to 56 hours per year, occurring on day one.

Working Hours

The Registered Nurse (Inpatient) will normally work Monday through Friday from 7:30 am to 4:00 pm, with a 30‑minute unpaid lunch break, including rotation days, evening and night shifts, and weekends and holidays. The Registered Nurse will not work more than 40 hours a week.

Summary of Duties

The Registered Nurse (RN) will provide direct patient care and support medical staff in delivering safe, effective, and patient-centered care to Veterans receiving services at the Sheridan VA Health Care System. The RNs will perform duties under the direction and supervision of the assigned medical staff in accordance with Veterans Health Administration (VHA) policies, facility procedures, and accepted nursing practices. The RN will provide 24/7 nursing care, including weekends and holidays.

Qualifications
  • Graduate of an Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) accredited nursing program.
  • Current, unrestricted RN license in any U.S. state or territory.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification;
    Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) required.
  • Minimum 1 year of direct patient care experience within the last 3 years.
  • Ability to speak, read, and write English fluently.
  • Must meet all VA credentialing, privileging, immunization, and background requirements.

Duties and Responsibilities Clinical Care & Patient Management
  • Perform comprehensive patient assessments, including physical, psychosocial, and functional evaluations.
  • Obtain and document the patient's medical and family history.
  • Develop, implement, and update individualized nursing care plans.
  • Administer medications safely, including IV therapies, injections, and oral medications.
  • Monitor and interpret cardiac rhythms and respond to abnormalities.
  • Perform wound care, skin assessments, and implement pressure‑injury prevention measures.
  • Conduct patient education on diagnoses, medications, treatments, and discharge instructions.
  • Assist with activities of daily living when needed (e.g., hygiene, mobility, feeding).
  • Manage patients with catheters, prosthetics, oxygen therapy, and other medical devices.
  • Prepare patients for diagnostic tests, procedures, and provider evaluations.
  • Participate in admission, transfer, and discharge processes.
  • Respond rapidly to medical emergencies and initiate life‑saving measures.
  • Perform CPR and utilize ACLS skills when required.
  • Recognize early signs of deterioration and elevate care appropriately.
  • Document all assessments, interventions, and patient responses in the VA EHR before the end of the shift.
  • Verify and carry out provider orders; follow VA policy regarding verbal orders.
  • Maintain accurate medication administration records and follow barcode medication administration protocols.
  • Ensure compliance with HIPAA, Privacy Act, and VHA Handbook 1907.01.
  • Report patient safety incidents, falls, and adverse events promptly.
Infection Control & Safety
  • Follow all VA infection control standards, including PPE use and isolation precautions.
  • Adhere to OSHA blood borne pathogen requirements.
  • Participate in the prevention and management of disruptive behavior and workplace violence protocols.
