R&D Engineer VCSEL Development

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

• Create and develop VCSEL devices for advanced sensing technologies and applications.
• Ensure simulation models accurately represent device behavior and convert models into practical designs.
• Plan, execute, and oversee experiments to test and confirm effectiveness and performance of the VCSEL designs.
• Work closely with customers to understand needs and performance criteria and deliver designs that exceed expectations.
• Create and apply methods and systems to precisely measure and evaluate the performance of VCSEL devices.

• Minimum 5 years of experience in opto‑electronic device development and characterization – epitaxy, fabrication and testing.
• PhD degree or equivalent in Semiconductors, Laser Physics or Engineering.
• Preferred background in laser design, device modelling, epitaxy, wafer fabrication and lab‑based testing.

• Innovative; use statistical thinking in decision‑making and problem solving.
• Self‑motivated, influential and persistent.
• Strong interpersonal/teaming skills, able to communicate effectively with employees at all levels.

• Normal conditions in an open‑concept office environment and climate‑controlled manufacturing cleanroom and R&D lab.
• Customer‑facing role.
• Must have flexibility to support a 24/7 operation.

Regularly required to talk or hear; frequently requires standing, walking, using hands to finger, handle, feel, and reach with hands and arms. Work in a Class 100/1000 clean room and lab environment as needed. Wear appropriate PPE and comply with site safety protocols. Work with and/or around gases or chemicals, both hazardous and non‑hazardous.

Depending on location, this position may be responsible for the execution and maintenance of ISO 9000, 9001, 14001 and/or other applicable standards that may apply to the relevant roles and responsibilities within the Quality Management System and Environmental Management System.
