Position SummaryThe Mental Health Technician (MHT) functions as an active part of the treatment team, providing continuous patient care, supervision, interaction, and role‑modeling to patients ranging from adolescence through geriatrics. The MHT works under the direction of a registered nurse and reports any changes in a patient’s condition to the RN. The MHT is responsible for the safety of an assigned unit by conducting visual observations of patients, collecting and recording vital signs and symptoms, reporting abnormalities, documenting findings appropriately, and employing appropriate crisis techniques as needed.
The MHT may assist patients with personal hygiene and activities of daily living under RN oversight. The MHT establishes and maintains a professional therapeutic relationship with patients, models and teaches appropriate social skills, facilitates daily groups as assigned, promotes clinical program adherence, and responds to emergency codes as requested or assigned.
Additional duties include safe transportation of patients on the Behavioral Health Center van or bus to various locations.
ResponsibilitiesAs outlined above, the MHT is expected to provide ongoing care, supervise patients, collect and document vital signs, maintain therapeutic relationships, facilitate groups, adhere to clinical programs, respond to emergencies, and safely transport patients.
Qualifications- High school diploma or equivalent.
- One year of related experience, with knowledge of psychiatric patient care techniques and understanding of mental health signs and symptoms preferred. One year of previous driver experience preferred.
- BLS (Basic Life Support) Healthcare Provider course per RQI guidelines must be completed during new‑hire orientation prior to clinical work. Handle With Care and Verbal De‑Escalation training must be completed within 60 days of hire and annually thereafter. Additional training will be provided with a specific timeline.
- Ability to identify and address the special needs of adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients and communicate effectively with them.
- Must have a valid driver’s license, be at least 21 years of age, and have no driving convictions, license suspensions or revocations, or serious violations within the last 36 months.
- Excellent organizational and time‑management skills; ability to prioritize work independently.
- Strong communication skills with patients and caregivers; proficiency with complex technical information and vehicle safety techniques.
