The Phlebotomist 1 (P1) provides a vital link in the procurement of a safe, quality blood product. Essential functions of the P1 are to assist with smooth, efficient donor flow, determine donor acceptability, perform sterile venipuncture for collection of blood products, provide excellent customer service and ensure compliance with applicable standards, regulations and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) throughout the entire donation process.
This position requires working in Donor Centers and Mobile Collections, as needed.
The P1 exemplifies and champions Carter Blood Care (CBC) Core Values and Code of Conduct, and adheres to CBC policies and applicable departmental SOPs. To support ongoing development and organizational goals, the P1 is required to attend meetings and training sessions, as assigned.
Regular travel between assigned work areas to support other locations/projects in Texoma and North Texas is required. A valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record (as specified in the current Vehicle Safety Loss Control Guidelines) are required (if designated).
This position may require working varied shifts, extended hours, weekends, and/or overtime to support operational needs. Regular, full-time attendance is required during normal working hours.
QualificationsEducation:
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent
- Some college, preferred
Experience:
- Minimum of 6 months of general work experience, or education in the medical field that includes comparable experience, such as an internship or externship
- Customer service experience (Intern and/or externship experience will satisfy this requirement)
- Blood banking or medical field experience, preferred
- Background in a highly regulated industry, preferred
- Bilingual (Spanish), preferred
- Must possess a valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record
Skills and Knowledge:
- Computer knowledge
- Excellent customer service and good communication (verbal and written) skills
- Self-motivated and positive with the ability to work well with others in a team atmosphere
- Detail-oriented with document review (e.g., completeness, accuracy, legibility) and the ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks
- Ability to move about the work area to handle donors and access equipment, including standing, sitting, walking, stooping and working in confined spaces and narrow aisles
- Ability to ascend and descend stairs/steps to enter and exit the transport vehicles;
Ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, or bend in order to set up blood collection equipment and access the equipment during use - Ability to communicate with donors to obtain medical history and monitor the donor during donation;
Ability to exchange accurate information in these situations - Ability to move and set up the blood collection equipment/supplies weighing up to 25 pounds daily and partner carry all items over 25 pounds and up to 50 pounds; as well as periodically assist donors who are experiencing a reaction (Donor Center Phlebotomists)
- Ability to move and set up blood collection equipment/supplies weighing up to 25 pounds daily and regularly partner carry all items over 25 pounds and up to 120 pounds, as well as periodically assist donors who are experiencing a reaction (Mobile Collections Phlebotomists)
- Frequently load and unload vehicles;
May be required to daily push carts/dollies weighing up to approximately 250 pounds;
Ability to handle many types of equipment and cases, and perform these functions in all types of weather conditions, including adverse (Mobile Collections Phlebotomists) - Stress associated with regular exposure to cleaning chemicals (e.g., bleach) and potentially infectious blood and blood products, on a daily basis
- Ability to understand, remember, and apply oral and/or written instructions or other information and apply common sense in performing the job;
Ability to understand and follow basic instructions and guidelines, and to express or exchange ideas by communicating professionally with others through the spoken word, email, text, or written report - Mental stress related to working irregular schedules, frequent overtime, long or unscheduled hours;
Ability to adapt to frequent schedule changing while maintaining a positive customer-focused attitude at all times;
Mental stress associated with attaining goals and objectives and the ability to meet deadlines - Ability to quickly adapt to changing environments (e.g., changing processes/procedures);
Ability to stay calm and on task in high-stress situations - Normal vision requirements (e.g., Ability to see close and distant objects, adjust focus, distinguish colors, judge distance)
