Position Summary

Transportation Maintenance Tech I/II/III – Stratford (2601320). TxDOT’s Amarillo District seeks a Transportation Maintenance Tech I, II, or III in our Stratford Maintenance Office. This role blends hands‑on work, teamwork, and the satisfaction of keeping our community moving safely and smoothly. Minimum Salary: 40,918.00;
Maximum Salary: 71,055.00;

Work Locations

Location:

Sherman County Maintenance Section, 1202 E Texas Ave, Stratford 79084. Travel: 25% of the time. Shift: Day; 40 hours per week (Monday‑Thursday, 10‑hour shift; possible nights, weekends, holidays). On‑site location flexibility.

Job Duties Technology Level I – Traffic Control and Minor Maintenance
  • Assists with traffic control; places and gathers cones, warning signs, and barricades; flags traffic.
  • Maintains picnic and rest areas, rights‑of‑way, maintenance yards, and comfort stations.
  • Moves/collects litter and roadway debris.
  • Mows rights‑of‑way and picnic areas; performs plant and landscape maintenance including tree and brush trimming.
  • Performs preventive maintenance inspections (PMI), routine servicing and minor repairs on equipment; completes required reports (timekeeping, equipment forms, inventory, accident forms, PMI).
  • Sands or cleans bridges and roads, posts warning signs, helps the public during emergency situations such as floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, snowstorms, accidents, and hazardous material spills.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Technology Level II – Maintenance and Repair
  • Maintains highways and rights‑of‑way; performs skilled roadway repairs; erects and repairs guard rails, highway markers, and signs; hauls materials and equipment to job sites.
  • Operates light equipment such as a front‑end loader, a quarter‑cubic‑yard roller, rotary broom, spreader box, backhoe, street sweeper, and mower.
  • Identifies, repairs, and installs signs, delineators, mailbox supports and posts; performs welding; and uses/moves equipment, tools, materials and products.
  • Assists in providing support to local law enforcement officials at accident sites; assists stranded motorists as required.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Technology Level III – Advanced Operations
  • Maintains highways and rights‑of‑way; performs highly skilled roadway repairs; erects and repairs guard rails, highway markers, and signs; hauls materials and equipment to job sites.
  • Operates complex heavy equipment such as a motor grader, large excavator, heavy bulldozer, crane, herbicide truck, heavy asphalt paving machine, self‑propelled asphalt distributor, and profiling/milling machine.
  • May serve as a work crew project lead ensuring work performed meets project specifications.
  • Trains other employees.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Education:

    Any.
  • Experience for Transportation Maintenance Tech (TMT):

    • TMT I:
    No experience required

    • TMT II: 1 year experience (transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, heavy equipment operation, or related work experience). Full‑time or prorated part‑time equivalent may satisfy this requirement.

    • TMT III: 2 years experience (same fields).
    Related technical training or education from an accredited institution may substitute one year of experience per year of education.
  • Valid driver’s license at the time of application. Must have a Commercial Class "A" Driver’s License with an "N" endorsement or obtain this CDL "A" within 120 days of employment. U.S. Military CDL Equivalent candidates must obtain a Texas Class "A" CDL within 120 days of employment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Commercial Driver’s License.
