Position Overview
The Department of Ecology is hiring an Environmental Cleanup Engineer (Environmental Engineer 2 or
3) within the Toxics Cleanup Program. This project position is funded through June 30, 2027 and may be renewed for the next bi‑annual budget cycle.
Northwest Region Office in Shoreline, WA. Salary includes a 5% premium for the King County location. You must live within a commutable distance of the duty station.
Schedule- Eligible for telework and flexible schedule options.
- During onboarding, in‑office presence is required 3–4 days per week for the first two weeks.
- Thereafter, you may telework most of the time with in‑person meetings at the Everett Smelter Site up to 2–3 days per week.
- Review and provide recommendations on environmental engineering reports, plans, estimates, and specifications for site cleanups.
- Plan and oversee design and construction projects at cleanup sites.
- Offer technical advice to staff and policy teams on evaluating engineering alternatives to resolve controversial environmental issues.
- Document contractor performance and provide oversight of contract engineering work.
- Assist with review of budget requests and estimates for contractor support.
- Environmental Engineer 2 (In‑Training): Six years of experience and/or education as described below.
- Experience in environmental engineering.
- Education major in sanitary, water resource, civil, geotechnical, environmental, chemical, mechanical, or related engineering field.
- Examples: 6 years experience; 5 years experience + 30‑59 semester or 45‑89 quarter credits; 4 years experience + 60‑89 semester or 90‑134 quarter credits; 3 years experience + 90‑119 semester or 135‑179 quarter credits; 2 years experience + Bachelor’s degree; 2 years experience + Engineer‑in‑Training Certificate; 1 year experience + Master’s degree or above.
- Environmental Engineer 3 (Goal Class): Registration as a Professional Engineer in Washington or equivalently licensed; three years of experience in environmental engineering that includes:
- Engineering plan development or review skills—develop, evaluate, and approve plans, drawings, and specifications with regulatory compliance.
- For both levels, experience must include:
- Fundamental environmental engineering concepts and practices.
- Knowledge of environmental regulations such as the Model Toxics Control Act, CERCLA, RCRA, and Clean Water Act.
- Hazardous materials training (40‑hour initial training plus annual refresher).
- Design development experience with environmental engineering theory and judgment.
- Intergovernmental collaboration skills with local, state, and federal officials.
- Project planning and administration abilities.
- Technical analysis and reporting skills.
- Budget and contract management experience.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
