Description

Our Maintenance and Operations Division is looking to add an experienced Stationary Engineer 2 (Boiler Operator) to join our team of dedicated professionals at Fircrest Residential Habilitation Center in Shoreline, WA.

As a Stationary Engineer 2, you will perform skilled engineering and repair work related to boiler and HVAC operations. This role is essential for maintaining a safe, comfortable, and efficient environment for our residents and staff.

This is not a general engineering role – it is for hands‑on operators of steam generators (also known as steam boilers, marine boilers, or hydronic heating boilers). You’ll be working directly with high‑pressure steam systems, utilizing advanced combustion control systems such as Cleaver‑Brooks HAWK, Allen Bradley, Fireye, Metasys, and similar platforms.

Some of What You Will Do

  • Ensure the safe, efficient operation and maintenance of a high-pressure steam plant with two high-pressure steam boilers (natural gas with #2 diesel backup)
  • Operate, monitor, and repair gauges, valves, metering pumps, boilers, electronic controls, and safety equipment for continuous operation
  • Work with auxiliary systems: feedwater pumps, condensate pumps, deaerators, air compressors, fuel oil pumps, chemical treatment pumps, pneumatic and hand tools, and emergency generator
  • Inspect, monitor, and repair internal mechanical heating rooms in individual buildings.
  • Repair steam infrastructure across 68‑acre campus.
  • Work with HVAC systems, including DOAS systems and Citygate and Samsung VRF systems.
  • Troubleshoot and make both major and minor adjustments to boiler and HVAC equipment
  • Interpret schematics, drawings, and manuals for equipment operation and upgrades
  • Operate and adjust combustion management systems (Cleaver‑Brooks HAWK, Allen Bradley, Fireye, Metasys, etc.)
  • Test boiler room equipment for safety, perform chemical treatment and cleaning of boiler water, condensate, and lubricate mechanical room equipment
  • Conduct blow‑down operations as needed for safe operation
  • Respond to after‑hours and weekend incidents as the on‑site maintenance expert, evaluating situations and providing updates to the Facilities Manager or designee
Desired Skills & Abilities
  • Comfortable working from ladders or elevated platforms in high-temperature environments
  • Proficient with personal computers and Microsoft Office (Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel, Word)
  • Able to work respectfully and sensitively with individuals with limited sensory/physical abilities and diverse staff
  • Ready to respond to emergent facility maintenance issues after hours
Who Should Apply
  • Three years of experience in the operation, maintenance, and/or repair of stationary (or marine) high‑pressure boilers and heating systems.
  • Certificate of completion of an advanced Stationary Engineer course from an accredited vocational/technical school or community college, AND two years of experience in the operation, maintenance, and/or repair of stationary (or marine) high‑pressure boilers and heating systems.
  • One year of State service as a Stationary Engineer 1.
  • Approved HVAC journeyman license, approved and complete apprentice program, or four years of work with an HVAC company in the repair, maintenance, and preventive maintenance of a variable refrigerant flow system and a dedicated outside air system.
