The Shorewood-Troy Public Library is looking for a part-time Teen Services Assistant. The position is 25 hours per week and pays $19.00 an hour. The successful candidate will be flexible and able to work nights primarily, with a mix of days and weekends as scheduled. Necessary qualifications include a desire to support and enrich the lives of teens and tweens in grades 7-12, knowledge of teen materials and interests, and a willingness to explore new interests with the soon-to-be adults in our community.
Job
Duties include:
- Selecting materials for the Teen collection (fiction, graphic novels, and manga) and participating in collection display, evaluation, and maintenance.
- Planning engaging, appropriate, and inclusive programming for teens and tweens.
- In partnership with the Outreach Team, planning and implementing a variety of school outreach visits. These visits will include book talks, promotion of library cards and events, reading, and programs.
- Establishing and fostering relationships with schoolteachers and librarians.
- Maintaining the Teen Space.
- Helping manage the Teen Advisory Board.
- Staffing the Reference Desk (assisting patrons of all ages with technology queries, reader’s advisory, and general library services).
- Processing passport applications (after on-the-job training).
- Completing additional tasks as assigned.
Preferred qualifications include an LTA (Library Technical Assistant Certificate) or equivalent on-the-job experience.
Other qualifications:
- Extensive knowledge about trends, culture, and teen interests.
- Ability to adapt to and effectively implement change.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, teens, and their caregivers.
- Ability to empathize and relate to the needs of all patrons.
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
- Knowledge of adult and teen reference principles, practices, and technology.
- Ability to remain calm and effective in difficult situations.
- Must be comfortable working with teens and adults.
Normal office soft-skills such as competency in Microsoft Office products, Google Suite, phone etiquette, and the ability to lift 30 pounds are required. Reliable transportation, including during the workday, is required.
Thesalary for the position is $19.00 an hour. Benefits include:
- Sick time of 45 hours per year, cumulative to 160 hours
- Vacation time of 120 hours
Two personal days after one year of employment.
