Position Overview
The Junior High School Counselor provides comprehensive therapeutic services to students, supporting their academic, social, emotional, and behavioral development. The counselor serves as a member of the school's administrative team and delivers direct counseling interventions, helps students and families address challenges, and works to ensure students have the coping skills, resources, and support systems necessary for success in junior high and beyond.
Key Responsibilities
Student Support & Therapeutic Services
- Provide individual and small group counseling to address students' social, emotional, behavioral, and academic needs.
- Implement brief therapeutic interventions and outcome-based treatment strategies for students experiencing difficulties.
- Support students in resolving personal issues related to school, home, family, health, and peer relationships.
- Guide students through key transitions, including elementary to junior high and junior high to high school.
- Develop Functional Behavioral Assessments (FBA) and Behavioral Intervention Plans (BIP) for students with problem behaviors.
- Work to build resilience, promote engagement, and help students discover and develop their strengths.
- Partner with teachers, administrators, and school staff to create supportive learning environments and implement effective behavior interventions.
- Participate on IEP, 504, MET, and CST teams to ensure therapeutic input into student planning.
- Provide professional development and in-service sessions for staff on behavior plans, interventions, and student mental health awareness.
- Confer with parents and guardians to engage them in therapeutic strategies and support student growth.
Program Development & Professional Standards
- Develop and implement school counseling programs that enhance student well-being, coping skills, and academic readiness.
- Monitor student progress in academics, attendance, and behavior, providing interventions as needed, as determined by school teams.
- Maintain confidentiality under FERPA and fulfill the role of Mandatory Reporter as required by law.
- Stay informed on research in counseling, therapeutic interventions, and student mental health to improve counseling services.
Qualifications
- Education:
Master's degree in Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, or related field from an accredited institution. - Certification:
Must meet Arizona Department of Education requirements for School Counselor certification (see ADE pathways for Guidance & Counseling, Counseling/Social Work/Psychology, Behavioral Health License, or Academic Advising program completion).
Experience:
Prior counseling experience in schools or related clinical settings preferred; practicum or equivalent experience considered. - Other Requirements:
Valid IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card.
Physical & Working Conditions
- Ability to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods; supervise students in classrooms, hallways, and outdoor areas.
- Ability to carry materials up to 25 pounds.
- Primarily school-day schedule with occasional evenings for family or school events.
- Active movement across campus required to provide student support.
