The Urgent Care Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant works as part of an inter‑professional team to provide efficient, high‑quality, cost‑effective care in the outpatient clinic setting, telehealth visits, and occupational medicine. Works under the supervision of a Medical Director and in a collaborative practice model within the scope of licensing and credentialing and in accordance with privileges allowed.

Responsibilities
  • Obtain patient history and perform assessments using interview, observation, and physical examination.
  • Order and interpret diagnostic testing as needed for patient care.
  • Provide direct patient care and management of health conditions utilizing prescriptive authority or referral to other healthcare providers.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives, staff development and education, and patient and caregiver education.
  • Take responsibility for professional development and participate in educational activities for staff and students.
  • Perform minor procedures such as laceration repair, incision and drainage of abscesses, and pediatric procedures for patients six months and older.
  • Order and interpret radiology, point‑of‑care testing, laboratory testing, and EKG readings.
Job Duties

Utilize the approved medical practices process in the delivery of all patient care. Provide care based on physical, psycho/social, educational, safety, and related criteria appropriate to the ages of patients served in assigned areas. Maintain an attitude of inquiry towards medical practices and patient care outcomes, and may develop research methodology. Provide education experiences to patient families, staff, other health professionals, and the community.

Qualifications
  • Education
    • Master’s degree in Nursing.
    • Bachelor’s degree in Physician Assistant Medicine or Health Sciences, or graduate of an approved Physician Assistant Training Program.
  • Certifications
    • Licensed in the state of practice as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) – Family Nurse Practitioner, Adult/Geriatric Nurse Practitioner, Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (all ANCC/AANPCP Certified).
    • Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS), Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Certification from the American Heart Association.
    • Eligible for prescriptive authority within the state of practice as outlined by the State Board of Nursing.
    • Licensed in the state of practice as a Physician Assistant with National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) Certification.
    • Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Medical Examiner Certification and registration with the National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners (preferred).
  • Work Experience
    • Preferred: 3 years of related working experience.

    Skills and Abilities

    (KSAs)
    • Computer skills and dexterity for data entry and information retrieval.
    • Effective verbal and written communication skills; ability to present information clearly and professionally.
    • Proficiency with Windows‑style applications, various software packages specific to the role, and keyboard.
    • Strong interpersonal skills.
    • Working knowledge of Advanced Practice Provider policies and protocols at a department and campus/system level.
    • Reliable transportation; must be able to travel between facilities.
    • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including weekend and holiday coverage; ability to work independently.
  • Physical Demands
    • Medium work:
      Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, 10 to 25 pounds frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects.
    • Work may involve walking or standing for a significant degree; occasional pushing or pulling of arm or leg controls; exposure to blood, body fluids, communicable diseases, hazardous medications, and waste.
